127 7/12/2020 6:49:00 AM Spring 1862 Union Message Generals revealed:
Stoneman in Cairo (cav brigade formed)
Curtis with A of the Cumberland
126 7/11/2020 8:39:00 PM Spring 1862 Confederate Message Thanks for remembering to change the turn in Vassal; that's the sort of thing I'll forget every time.

Generals placed.
125 7/11/2020 8:35:00 PM Spring 1862 Union Message Union generals placement.

There was one cavalry and one infantry general, so it's obvious where they are, but I turned them upside down and placed them "secretly" anyway. The cavalry general went to Cairo, and the infantry general went to the A of the Cumberland.

I also changed the turn, and Vassal automatically made the SW reduction for War Weariness.
124 7/11/2020 6:23:00 PM Spring 1862 Confederate Message * 1 Confederate SP moved Norfolk to Richmond.
* 1 Confederate SP moved Weldon to Richmond.
* 1 Confederate SP moved Augusta to Dover, TN.
* 1 Confederate SP moved Kingston, SC to Dover, TN.
123 7/11/2020 10:30:00 AM Spring 1862 Union Message Also, I was supposed to lose 5 SW in the Fall for War Weariness. I'll fix that when I put my generals out.
122 7/11/2020 10:23:00 AM Spring 1862 Union Message Will you advance the turn on Vassal when you do your Strategic Move? I forgot to at reinforcements.
121 7/11/2020 10:21:00 AM Spring 1862 Union Message Union Strategic Movement
2 SP from Jackson, OH, to the Army of the Cumberland.
3 SP from Washington, D.C., to Manassas, VA.

I tried also to move 1 SP from Cincinnati to Cairo, but again, I couldn't raise the SP in a space above 6 without an army. I don't remember that being in the rules except with regard to movement, but I guess that's the way it is.
120 7/10/2020 10:39:00 PM Spring 1862 Confederate Message Blockade runner reinforcements to Norfolk, Savannah, Mobile, New Orleans.
119 7/10/2020 10:36:00 PM Spring 1862 Confederate Message 1SP to...

118 7/10/2020 12:20:00 PM Spring 1862 Union Message Turn 4!

Union SP reinforcements.
Here's another advantage you got out of Forward to Richmond: with no army in DC, I couldn't put more than 6 SP total there (5 reinforcements as opposed to the 8 I would normally get).

Other reinforcements:
2 SP in Jackson, OH
4 SP in Cincy
4 SP in Cairo, IL
117 7/10/2020 11:40:00 AM Fall 1861 Union End Turn

Army of the Potomac: 1 SP lost

114 7/9/2020 12:04:00 AM Fall 1861 Confederate Message Oh, hmm, it didn't show the card. It was:

1 / Confederate Railroad Degradation (Union)
The Union player may randomly remove one strategy card from the Confederate hand, which is discarded.
113 7/8/2020 11:44:00 PM Fall 1861 Confederate Discard Strategy card Message from Confederate:
Well, here's my big play:

112 7/8/2020 9:37:00 PM Fall 1861 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #94: 2 / Strategy Board
Union player may make a naval move with up to three SPs plus one general.

Message from Union:
This was my one usable Union card this turn, but there weren't enough forces in the right places to do anything with it. So I flipped two more spaces in West Virginia.

You're up for your last card.
111 7/8/2020 9:50:00 AM Fall 1861 Confederate Play Strategy card as Operations #72: 2 / John Ericsson's Monitor Fleet

110 7/7/2020 10:57:00 AM Fall 1861 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #23: 2 / Bermuda Blockade Surge
Confederate immediately receives two SPs in any open Blockade Runner Port, no more than one SP per port, but more than 1SP per Blockade zone is permitted. If insufficient ports are available, the excess SPs are lost.

Message from Union:

For what it's worth, Forward to Richmond messed up my meager plan!
109 7/6/2020 7:04:00 PM Fall 1861 Confederate Play Strategy card as Event #55: 1 / CSS Tennessee
Confederate may place one Ironclad in a controlled port or coastal fort space.

Message from Confederate:
Aw, shucks, you're right, the PC markers prevent it.

Place an ironclad in Charleston
108 7/6/2020 12:56:00 PM Fall 1861 Confederate Message Will FtR end with a battle, when the army enters Richmond itself?
107 7/6/2020 11:47:00 AM Fall 1861 Confederate Message I'm sorry for the delay, Ken. Yesterday was rough! I will make a move shortly.
106 7/5/2020 12:27:00 PM Fall 1861 Union Message I'm relieved that that's the card I lost. I think I followed the instructions correctly. I activated the only army within 4 spaces, the Army of the Potomac, left 1 SP in DC because it has a fort, and moved three spaces forward, adding PC in each space so I would run out of movement points (as suggested in 4.62).

I still don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing -- for either one of us. Maybe you'll slip into Washington, and I'll find out quickly.

You're up for round 4, I think.
105 7/5/2020 12:23:00 PM Fall 1861 Union Discard random Strategy card Operations - 1 / Davis Tours the South

Message from Union:
OK, if I understand this right, the card I'm discarding is not used. "Must follow the instructions on this card" means on the Forward to Richmond card. So I think your play of that card was your round 3. My discarding and moving is my round 4. Sound right?
104 7/5/2020 11:07:00 AM Fall 1861 Confederate Play Strategy card as Event #3: 1 / Forward to Richmond
Union may activate any Union army within 4 spaces of Richmond, VA. The army must enter Richmond or move as close to Richmond as possible, but may convert spaces to maintain an LOC. All SPs associated with the army must be moved (no dropping off SPs), except 1 SP may be left if the Army began its movement from a fort (if last SP, move completed). If played by the Confederate, he draws a card from the Union hand which is discarded, and the Union player follows the instructions of this card as his next card play.

103 7/4/2020 10:10:00 PM Fall 1861 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #80: 1 / Southern Religious Revival
Confederate player immediately receives three SPs in a single space, and loses three SW points. SPs must be placed in a friendly controlled space (including Pro-Union spaces) with a LOC free of Union SPs.

Confederate immediately places two SPs in any friendly controlled space in Tennessee with an LOC (both SPs are placed in the same space). The SPs cannot be placed in a Pro Union space or one occupied by Union SPs or fort.

Message from Union:

PC markers dropped in Wheeling and Grafton, WV.

CSA up for round 2.
100 7/4/2020 12:47:00 PM Fall 1861 Confederate Play Strategy card as Operations #31: 2 / Contraband of War
Confederate removes two SPs (Union chooses), no more than one SP per space. Void after Emancipation Proclamation has taken effect. Remove from deck if event is played.

Message from Confederate:
I never even learned to correctly pronounce the name of my neighborhood in St. Louis (Gravois Park).

Activate A. Johnston for a corps move.

Johnston/2SP to Bowling Green, pick up the SP there
Johnston/3SP to Clarksville
Johnston/3SP to Dover, drop off an SP there
Johnston/2SP to McKenzie

99 7/4/2020 9:47:00 AM Fall 1861 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #45: 3 / Food Shortage
Confederate loses SW equal to current Union blockade value.

Message from Union:
It wouldn't do me any good to play this as an event!

Activating Fremont for a corps move.

Fremont and Buell and 2 SP take a scenic route through Arkansas and stop in New Madrid. (In case you didn't pick this up during your time in Missouri, that's pronounced "Noo MAD-rud.")

Over to the CSA for round 1. And remember, every thing you do to further the Confederate cause on the 4th of July is an especially heinous act.
98 7/3/2020 11:28:00 PM Fall 1861 Confederate Message No campaign for me. Over to you, Ken!
97 7/3/2020 11:27:00 PM Fall 1861 Confederate Draw Strategy cards 6 cards drawn.

96 7/3/2020 9:59:00 PM Fall 1861 Union Message Sorry about getting mixed up about how to change the turn. "Change Game Turn" must only be for correcting mistakes. I used it yesterday to go to Fall of 1861. Then just now I clicked "End Turn" to get rid of my hand, but it advanced the turn yet again. So I "Changed Game Turn" back again.

After you draw your cards, you decide who goes first!
95 7/3/2020 9:56:00 PM Fall 1861 Union Draw Strategy cards 6 cards drawn.

91 7/3/2020 7:33:00 PM Fall 1861 Union Message So you're up for placing your generals, and then we can draw cards.
90 7/3/2020 7:32:00 PM Fall 1861 Union Message I only have one general this turn: Halleck. No need for randomization. He goes to "Other Generals" in the Army of the Potomac.
89 7/3/2020 6:18:00 PM Fall 1861 Confederate Message Nothing from me, either.
88 7/3/2020 1:17:00 PM Fall 1861 Union Message End of Turn registered on Vassal.

86 7/3/2020 12:41:00 PM Summer 1861 Confederate Message Kentucky goes secesh. +10 SW, +2 momentum bonus.

1 SP lost in the corps in Manassas.

My expert tactical skills in the Battle of Fayetteville ensured that the only other group susceptible to attrition has avoided it.
85 7/2/2020 9:25:00 PM Summer 1861 Union Message Union Political Control and Attrition phases completed.
PC in Fayetteville and Ft. Fisher.
Missouri controlled by Union. SW +10.

Just click the state control box in Kentucky first, and Vassal will take care of all the spaces and the SW track for you!

Attrition was rough: 1 SP lost many places, 2 SP lost in DC.

You're up for PC and Attrition. Then we advance the turn and receive no Reinforcements, only generals and strategic movement.
84 7/2/2020 4:38:00 PM Summer 1861 Confederate Play Strategy card as Operations #59: 2 / Farragut
Union may make a naval more with up to three SPs plus one general. Move may pass one ungarrisoned fort without “running the guns” to conduct an amphibious assault (may not pass an ironclad). Ignore first torpedo encountered during naval move. If the port space is captured it immediately receives a Union PC marker. Add +2 to Running the Guns die roll.

81 7/2/2020 4:32:00 PM Summer 1861 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #105: 1 / Detached Cavalry
Played prior to a battle against an army possessing one or more cavalry brigades. The ONLY effects are the Army’s Commanding General’s battle rating (offense or defense) is immediately reduced by 2 and no Cavalry general’s battle ratings may be used in the battle. The effects end at the conclusion of the battle. Cavalry generals are not available for casualty determination. OR: Place one PC marker in any space within four spaces (includes river connections) of a single cavalry brigade. The four space range many not be traced through Northeast Alabama. The space may not contain an enemy SP or fort, but may contain an Ironclad or Torpedoes.

80 7/2/2020 4:27:00 PM Summer 1861 Union Message Response from Dave Rubin:
The final Amphibious Assault modifier (6.41) is what’s capped; in this case, the *only* modifier is Confederate (fort), so it nets to +2 for the CSA. The force ratio is NOT part of that netting, so the USA gets a full +4 for that. Thus, the Union *will* inflict a “1”. Even if the Confederates also inflict a “1”, Union wins, because 7.32 says ties go to the attacker in two cases: (1) an asterisked result or (2) an ungarrisoned fort. The latter exception, of course, applies.

I sent a follow-up to make sure I understand. But it appears that the amphibious assault DRM that only one side gets comes from your fort, subs, torpedoes, and ironclads, and my Amphibious Assault rating (0 right now) and possibly card. That nets you +2. Now we add all other DRMs. There's only one in this case: the force ratio of +4 for me. I think what threw me off is that that force ratio was indicated under a rule for amphibious assault.

My 5 + 4 yields 1*.
Your 5 + 2 yields 1.
The defender in an amphibious assault loses ties if the attacker has any strength left. So I've won the assault. *Whew!*

OK, *now* it's smooth sailing from here on out.
79 7/2/2020 4:23:00 PM Summer 1861 Confederate Play Strategy card as Operations #64: 1 / USS Kearsarge sinks USS Alabama
Union SW increased by one.

Message from Confederate:

78 7/2/2020 4:13:00 PM Summer 1861 Union Message I think we play through because, given our dice rolls, the result was a tie, and defenders lose the tie in amphibious assault. That much seems clear and consistent in all sections of the rules.
77 7/2/2020 4:11:00 PM Summer 1861 Union Message Union SW up to 105+ (+1 for fort, +2 Change of Fortune)
CSA SW down to 96- (-1 for fort, -3 for Change of Fortune)

You're up for round 4.
76 7/2/2020 4:10:00 PM Summer 1861 Confederate Message Should we play through, do you think, or wait for a reply?
75 7/2/2020 4:07:00 PM Summer 1861 Union Message I believe that means that I lose 1 SP. I'll make a Vassal file with the change.

And, given the rules that seem to show removing a fort token and "capturing" a coastal fort to be a battle result, not a PC result, I'll adjust the SW track.

I truly have no idea. Thanks for asking on BGG; I hope you get a friendly reply.

Here's that defense roll.
73 7/2/2020 3:36:00 PM Summer 1861 Union Message (1) The end of the first paragraph of 6.41 says that "other DRMs, such as battle ratings and force ratios, still apply." So maybe that means . . . oh I don't know what it means!

(2) I asked on boardgamegeek. I'll let you know if I hear an answer.

Die roll for attack on Ft. Fisher.
71 7/2/2020 3:13:00 PM Summer 1861 Union Message I just found section 18.0. I thought it would answer all questions about how I won, but it doesn't. 6.81 says mine is an automatic victory. But 18.0 (first situation under Ungarrisoned Fort) says a result of 1 attacker loss and 0 defender loss means I fail.

Now if I'm right about DRM, I have a +2, which means I have a 1-in-6 chance of rolling for 0 loss. I guess I'll roll.
70 7/2/2020 2:59:00 PM Summer 1861 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #118: 3 / Mexican Supply Line
Confederate player receives 2 SP in any friendly controlled Texas space (both SPs placed in the same space). The space does not need a LOC. The space may not contain Union SPs or forts. If no eligible space exists the SPs are lost.

Message from Union:
Play for naval move/amphibious assault

2 SP from DC to Fort Fisher, NC.

In the Vassal file, I just moved the SP. It's something new, so I have questions.

(1) According to 6.81 (Play Note), I automatically win, but how exactly? Because I'm guaranteed survival?

(2) According to 6.41, in amphibious assault, only one side gets a DRM -- I think? It appears that you got +2 for having a fort and I got +4 because against an ungarrisoned fort, the attacker gets +4 force ratio DRM. So I guess I got +2 overall?

(3) So now do you roll with no DRM on the small battle chart to see if you eliminate an SP of mine? I think so.

(4) According to 12.11, I get a SW bump when I capture the fort. Is that now or in the Political Control phase when the PC marker goes down? Because according to 6.13, Fort Fisher is in some limbo state in which, even after I've won the battle, it can prevent naval movement past it. On the other hand, 6.81 and 6.86 sort of equate removing a land fort with capturing a coastal fort. Oh! 11.3.B talks about capturing a Capital during strategy rounds.
69 7/2/2020 2:08:00 PM Summer 1861 Confederate Play Strategy card as Operations #43: 1 / Kansas Admitted to Union

67 7/2/2020 12:50:00 PM Summer 1861 Union Message I think this means I stay in the space and your generals (including the disembodied Stuart) go to the turn track. I'm not clear at the moment if I get to keep moving, but I'm choosing not to. So it's your turn.

(I'll get back to my computer in about a half hour. If you've already taken a turn, I'll remove the SP when I play round 4.)
66 7/2/2020 12:39:00 PM Summer 1861 Confederate Message Is that bad? I'm guessing that's bad.

46 6/30/2020 4:41:00 PM Summer 1861 Union Message Assuming that they're all really assigned randomly, I placed generals:

1 in Harper's Ferry
2 in Cincinnati
1 in Cairo
1 with Fremont in Springfield, MO

If you think I did the right thing, we'll move ahead.

You may have to click many extra times on the Vassal file: after dragging the whole stack three times to get them close to DC, it took me many clicks to separate the generals so I could place them one at a time.

42 6/30/2020 2:10:00 PM Summer 1861 Confederate Message Can that SP make it all the way to Springfield? The rail line seems to stop at Rolla. (I might be misunderstanding strategic movement.)
41 6/30/2020 1:49:00 PM Summer 1861 Union Message Also, under "Rules" in Vassal, I set card control to ACTS. Don't know what difference that will make.

33 6/29/2020 8:56:00 PM Summer 1861 Union Message I guess the reinforcements in DC go directly into the army there. Does that seem right?

29 6/28/2020 7:04:00 PM Summer 1861 Confederate Message I think Dover does connect to the Cumberland (it has a C on the space) but my thinking was that controlling Paducah would prevent supply, since the Cumberland joins the Ohio before Paducah.

But I'm not sure that's right, either. I'm a little fried from D&D and will have to review the naval control rules tomorrow morning (I'm looking, close as I can, at 6.6).

If you control Dover in the PC phase, I think you destroy the resource there, so I wanna make sure you don't get shorted that SW swing.
