Thanks for the insights Tom, I really appreciate it. I'll keep on eye out for any tournament news in 2021. Good luck with rest of the tournament. |

One final strategic thought - there is also an approach which involves the CP going all out in the West but I personally am not a big fan of that. If you look at ACTS matches of other experienced CP players you might get some good ideas. |

Thanks for the game, Todd, it actually was pretty close until the last few turns. I'm glad to hear you had fun in the tournament and hope you can join us in the next one. (I expect to run another BPA sponsored event early next year, in parallel to this 2019 event which probably won't finish until sometime in 2022.) I also enjoy the puzzles, especially when a sharp reader finds a solution better than the one the GMs and I had in mind. ;) With regards to feedback on this match: * The first break I had was when you chose to 'give up' Gaza. I think you need to respond to that, even having Kemal, as once the CP loses that space, Damascus, Medina, Baghdad, and Mosul are almost certainly going to be AP at the end of the game. * I was very nervous once you sent FIVE German armies to the east. Only the pressure in the West and your 'missing' AH armies saved my Russians. And my trench rolls, of course. * As far as holding in the west, here are some suggestions: - Getting 2 or 3 RP plays in each turn is critical. Be wary of plays that lead to AP 'stealing' those RP plays. (Example: My threatening Berlin.) Head that off with plays that prevent that. (Example: Garrison Berlin.) - Rainbow Coalition Defense: You need to bring AH/BU/TU forces into the Western trenches to absorb losses. Walk AH armies from Vienna, SR corps directly from Bulgaria and Turkey. - Finally, dig in early, dig in deep. You want to get to T2 as quickly as possible. It's hard to make progress in the East if you're constantly scrambling in the West. If it becomes clear you're going to lose the West, you want to switch to a "Defend the Rhine" strategy (Essen, Frankfurt, Mannheim) and try to knock out Russia completely. You played a good game, Todd, there are no slouches left in the tournament. You took care of business in the Balkans and you also were getting into position to take care of business in the East. Stay safe and hopefully I'll see you in the cardboard trenches early next year! |

I think I'm going to resign here Tom. I had hoped to make a better showing of it, but i just ran into a buzz saw playing against your AP. I could never put enough pressure into any of the fronts, with maybe the exception of the Balkans, and just let the West get totally out of control by being too passive. Bummed to be exiting the tournament, but I'm more than happy to make it to the 5th round as I basically learned how to play the game in my first round loss. I think I was fortunate in some of my other opponent matchups though and never ran into a player as good as you. I want to thank you for the work you do for the community and for running the tournament. I also like the newsletters you puts out (especially the ones with PoG puzzles in them to work out). I have a long way to go in learning this game. If there are any pointers you can give me or big mistakes you can recount I would appreciate the input. |
