93 9/18/2020 10:14:00 AM Turn 22 Greg Message Greetings Greg:

The destruction of the 1/22 Tk. pretty much seals the fate of the British 8th Army unless something dramatic can be done to reverse the onrushing Axis tide. Although the British general is confident that he can delay the advance of the DAK for a time, the ultimate outcome seems inescapable. That said, General Wavell decides to throw the dice and try for a come-from-behind victory. It may not work, but the alternative is virtually certain to be an Allied defeat.

ALLIED COMBATS:

There are two (2) die rolls required this time around.

#1: 2NZ/4 & 2NZ/5 vs. 15/8 & Trenta 1-5

#2: 1/2, 1st & 32nd Tks., 2SA/4, 2SA/6, 50/69 & 2NZ/6 vs. 21/5 & Ariete 1-1 DB2-K44 Exch: All
92 9/18/2020 10:13:00 AM Turn 22 Greg Message Greetings Greg:

Well, yet again, when it really counts, the die comes through for you!

Best Regards, Joe

81 9/17/2020 2:04:00 PM Turn 20 Greg Message My reverie at the DE on your 2-2-6 ended when I noticed, belatedly that the th SA recon had "embedded itself with a forward escarpment stack instead of remaining by the Qattara depression. Should be quite an interesting envelopment turn coming up!
80 9/17/2020 1:06:00 PM Turn 20 Greg Message Rommel has no other options but to continue his slow advance along the escarpment in spite of the fact that these tactics are reminiscent of WWI trench warfare than they are of the blitzkrieg Rommel prefers. So Rommel uses his last remaining reckon on a 1:2 vs 4SAMotor and 7/7SG (DB L42) and the remaining adjacent attack 7/31Motor @5:1. Sound familiar? In this case "insanity" is necessity!

Sunk. The dice have not been kind to the Axis lately. "1"s on Supply rolls and "2"s on attacks and "6"s on soakoffs. That's just an observation, not a complaint. I experimented with an AV of 50/69 and spreading out M53 O52 to start a push against your HB, but it was clear that I couldn't do much damage in two turns before your reinforcements would allow you to attack my 7-10s from three hexes. It was clear to me that was what you were preparing. So I chose to take my chances with 3:1 vs 7/4 and a 1:4 soak off by Bologna. It will be either a tank killed or an end of game exchange.

General Wavell thought long and hard about launching a low-odds attack to relieve the 4I/11 Brigade but, in the end, decided that he just didn't command sufficient reserve formations to absorb the losses should such an attempt fail with disastrous results.

Housekeeping:

50/6SA Motor leaves reserve and enters play at the Allied Home Base.

22 Gds. lands at the Allied Home Base and moves inland.

7/7 Mech. and Supply #1 both land at Tobruch.

7/3I Motor goes to sea.

4I/11 expires at the end of the Allied player turn due to isolation.

There are no Allied combats.

The DAK may have suffered some losses, but as long as the Panzer regiments are still on the prowl, the 8th Army has to be exceedingly circumspect. Now I just need for the Royal Navy to rouse itself and beginning intercepting Rommel's supply convoys, for a change.

20 9/10/2020 3:01:00 PM Turn 5 Greg Message Greetings Greg:

Since a paucity of troops means that British options are still severely limited, you will probably find little to surprise you in this Commonwealth move.

Regarding your comments about the best approach for the Axis to adopt in bringing Tobruch under siege. I can certainly appreciate the strategic advantages that would accrue to Rommel if the 3-1 versus the 2/3 Tk. were to succeed. On the other hand, as we see in this game, the downside is just as punishing to the DAK, not just because of the immediate and significant loss in Axis combat power (and maneuver elements), but also because of the limitations that an exchange places on Rommel's future offensive options.

For my own part, I prefer to drive the British back into the fortress with a minimum of risk. Once Tobruch is completely invested, the two British 4-4-7s will inevitably be tasked with garrisoning the fortress, and hence, they will pretty much be out of the fight until the DAK closes up on the El Alamein Line. The 3-1 (Surrounded) attack versus a British 4-4-7 is always going to be available, so I personally see no compelling reason to gamble quite so early in the campaign.

If you are curious, I would have taken a very different line against this defense. Which is to say: I would have attacked both Pol/Carpathian (from I25) and 7A/2 (from J35) at 7-1, and soaked off with Savena against 7/3I Motor and 9A/20 (from I25) at 1-4. Granted, this approach does little to actually damage the 8th Army's available combat strength, but it does force the Allies to abandon H25 and, just as importantly, it also begins the process of clearing the British block in the Salum Pass.

2. EXCHANGE 2/3 tanks with the two PZ Gds and Pavia!
18 9/10/2020 11:01:00 AM Turn 5 Greg Message Greetings Joe,

After considering the strategic consequences of Rommel's two options, he decides on the boldest (and riskiest) one. Sure elimination of an Allied tank brigade (and the possibility of taking the port a turn or two later), gives more advantages to Rommel than the loss of Axis support units gives to the Allies.

So Rommel launches the following attacks simultaneously.

1 Ariete, Brescia and Trenta attack the Poles @ 4:1. Ex Brescia DB= DE

2 Savena soaks off against 22nd Gds, 9A/20, 7/31 Motor @ 1:6

3 All the 21st and all the 15th except 15/33 and Pavia attack 2/3 tank @ 3:1 Ex Both Pz Gds and Pavia. DB=DE.

ADVANCE 15/8 AFTER COMBAT

File coming by email.

Yes, the Axis I Jun 1941 game turn -- barring unusually good combat results for Rommel during the earlier turns -- can present the "Desert Fox" with a "knotty" short-term operational conundrum, especially if the Commonwealth commander opts to defend Tobruch from direct attack by occupying a tight perimeter all around the British coastal fortress. That said, and assuming local supplies are available, it is my view that the DAK almost always needs to drive the British defenders back into the fortress before Commonwealth reinforcements start arriving in June. And that being the case, then the only real question is how much risk should Rommel accept in order to complete the DAK's investiture of Tobruch.

As you might expect, I have my own thoughts on all this, but will hold back on sharing them until after I have received your move.

Best Regards, Joe

17 9/9/2020 11:11:00 PM Turn 5 Greg Message For two days now Rommel has been consider his options to force the Allied defenders back into Tobruch before any reinforcements arrive It would be a bold and risky strike to attack the 2/3 tank. No soak off is required, but there is only a 1/3 chance of eliminating the tank. He can't let more time pass without a significant number of units killed. The alternative is to attack the 22nd Gds defending on the other flank. There he has a 5/6 chance of success, but that requires Savena to make a soak off @ 1:5. Of course Rommel could guarantee the loss of both the 2/3 and the Poles, if he attacks both in a pincer. The soak off is only a bit more likely to be eliminated, Axis losses It could be as many as 10 or none at all.
Rommel decides to sleep on it again. He has to consider more carefully the many ramifications for future turns.
