124 10/26/2020 9:37:00 AM May-Aug 1942 Japanese Message Hi Mike -

All correct - you have 4 activations. Remember that my air units are attacking from extended range so their attack factor is halved.

If you respond that way I can only do 20 hits - all you need is for any of your air to survive to deny me the +2 for air superiority during ground combat

If you respond with just SEAC air, I would need a "9" to wipe out all of your air. If you responded with the Indomitable I couldn't eliminate all of your air, at most reduce the CV and the Exeter in Rangoon.

That would leave you 3 activations to push all of your ground units into Rangoon, giving you a total of 33 ground factors. With that a 1.5x result would completely eliminate the attackers -

I couldn't get air or naval supremacy for this battle, so my DRM for ground combat would be -2.

At best I could do 57 hits - ensuring that you would have defenders left if more ground units went into Rangoon no matter what.

Doing it that way is a little risky since the winner of the ground combat is the side that loses the less steps, unless one side is completely eliminated.

If you choose to respond with more air units you will likely damage my air units but will almost surely lose Rangoon - which normally falls anyway -
damaging the air units is likely better in the long run - since the yellow dot units can't be reinforced.

Just to give you some options - a lot of it depends on the dice!

110 10/25/2020 10:04:00 AM May-Aug 1942 Japanese Message Oh, and I forgot I sent this as well -

""Hi Mike -

Weíre good - I am enjoying this because itís also helping me to make sure I have my facts straight about the game - I have spent some time as an instructor in two different disciplines and I have found that I learned more teaching than I knew before I started teaching. So this is helping me as well -

And Iím not in a hurry - the last two games that I finished (that I lost both by the way) one took 6 months, and the other took 8 months. Normally about 4-5 card plays a weekÖ.

And regarding the PBM after my turn - that turn I only moved 3 ground units, so I had no PBM available anyway. The only time that ground units conduct PBM is after a failed amphibious assault due to losing the air-naval battle.

When you get a chance take a look at my offensive and see if you figure out how to react to it -

Sean""
109 10/25/2020 10:02:00 AM May-Aug 1942 Japanese Message My other email was this -

""Oh, one more thing - we can do the South Pacific game if you think that would be more helpful to your learning process. If we do so we can just put this game on hold until you want to come back to itÖ.

Sean""

I'll use ACTS to send future messages so we have no issues -

Sean

108 10/25/2020 10:01:00 AM May-Aug 1942 Japanese Message Hi Mike - regarding the offensive when I moved units up the Kwai Bridge hexes, and attacked Kuantan - I emailed -

""Hi Mike -

Donít forget the intel die roll - you have a in-supply HQ in range with units able to activate to respond and help the defense of this hex. If you succeed with the die roll you may be able to prevent the Japanese from capturing the hexÖ.

Sean

With every offensive - if you follow the Offensives Sequence spelled out in rule 7.2 you will never go wrong with either running an offensive or responding to an offensive correctly -

Sean""

An intel die roll that succeeded would have allowed you to activate SEAC (battle hex was 10 hexes away from SEAC, so just inside it's range) and send naval units to possibly reduce the Japanese army to a 9-12 which would require a higher die roll to actually capture the hex...

If the Japanese control hexes 2108 and 2109, they become Trans Routes for the remainder of the game and any Japanese HQ that can trace a continuous Trans Routes via the Kwai RR to Rangoon has +1 added to its efficiency rating if any units are activated in Burma or Northern India. The real Burma Road route is between Lashio and Kunming - hexes 2206, 2306, and 2407. They are built at the beginning of the game and cannot be destroyed.

The Burma Road status basically tracks if and how the supplies get to Kunming. If Rangoon is controlled by the Allies, then the supplies go via the already constructed route from Rangoon, to Lashio, and then to Kunming.

If the Japanese capture Rangoon, the Kunming gets cut off from supply unless one of two things happens - either the Allies have to build some or all of the transport routes in Northern India, or via play of the Hump card which starts the supply airlift from India over the Himalayas and supplies Kunming via air.

The Allies can establish / re-establish the Burma Road overland by constructing strategic transport routes at Jarhat, and then either Imphal or Ledo. That allows a constant strategic route from Madras to Jarhat, then either thru Imphal/Mandalay or Ledo/Myitkyina to Lashio, then to Kunming.

The Allies can build strategic routes by a 3 OC card play on their turn. There are also cards that allow parts of the routes to be built as a bonus if the cards are played as an event.

The Burma Road impacts the China Offensives that the Japanese can conduct via a 3 OC card play. The better the supply situation via the Burma Road/Hump - the less effective the Japanese offensives in China become.

I'm sure I'll run a China Offensive later in the game and you will be able to see how those are run, and how the status of the Burma Road impact that

Took me a while to grasp how the Burma Road works - don't worry, it will become more obvious the more you play

anyway, I didn't PBM - file up and back to you for your next card play

63 10/9/2020 8:15:00 AM Jan-Apr 1942 Allies Message Really Dumb Question Time.....
I feel like I should know this....
So the Burma road is open to start the game ? Is that correct ?
And when / if the JP captures it the Burma road is closed.
Iíve read the rules a couple of times, but I definitely still feel like Iím wandering around in the woods sometimes..

56 10/8/2020 5:11:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Japanese Message Hi Mike -

Regarding your last move - 1 Indian and 1st Burma both used 2 MP making their moves because neither started in a hex with an established strategic transport route. But all of the Chinese units started in a hex that has a transport route established - so they only used 1/2 MP, and have 1.5 MP left over. Did you want them to stop there?

One option you have would be to move them to 2107/2007 - if I did it I would split them up, with the 66th Chinese moving to 2107 with one of the other units.

The reason for this is if/when I come up to take Rangoon, I would have to use resources to attack the Chinese units to pin them in place while I moved into Rangoon. Otherwise if the offensive was detected you could activate them and move them into Rangoon and make the battle for Rangoon much harder for me.

But if your plan is to move them further into Burma to set up a second line of defense then you have another 1.5 MP to do so.

Just a thought - let me know if you want them to stay where they are, or move farther -

51 10/5/2020 7:06:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Japanese Message Good day Mike -

At this time the movement of forces to the Noumea / Efate area would be premature - we each have 4 cards left, and if you put some of your Navy down there it might be a tempting target for me. The US player loses Political Will if there are no US carriers on the map at the end of the turn, and loses more if there are no naval units at all. They are safe for now in Hawaii - and you will get at the least the 2 HQ units that are turn 3 reinforcements and all of the units in the delay box - which should improve your position in New Guinea and SE of Guadalcanal at the beginning of the next turn

I think your best options right now would be the following - establish a defensive position for the CBI north of Rangoon with your Chinese units, and pull the 1st Burma Division either back into Rangoon, or farther north. You could also move 1st Indian into Rangoon, but the Japanese are going to move on it early next turn if not by the end of this turn. I have never seen a game where Rangoon hasn't fallen - except for one, and that required some really good cards for the Allies and some great die rolls.

The second thing I would do would be to use a card to voluntarily withdraw SW Pac HQ from Manila to the turn track. That way it comes into play as a reinforcement next turn.

Your hand likely has a really good card that you can't use this turn - I would place that into the Future Offensive Queue later in the turn if you wish. That would give you an extra card play next turn. I use FOQ every turn if I can, depending on the situation.

Hope that helps -
Sean

So my plan is to move up any units that I can into the Noumea/ Efate area Southeast of Guadacanal
Two questions
1) Is this normal Allied strategy ?
2) What units would you leave behind to protect Hawaii ?
Note : Please donít write a long detailed answer. I donít want to take too much of your time and if it is too deep it will go over my head.
Thanks !

I would normally want to use this as an event to keep your reinforcements delayed - but since I drew only one Military Event in my opening hand I think it's more important to isolate SW Pac HQ and pick up an open resource hex.
