441 10/26/2020 3:37:00 PM Fall 1863 Union Message I actually think right now he'd be blocked as far back as Little Rock, where I control the river entry via New Orleans? A fort in Vicksburg combined with Columbus would control the river between the two forts, including the Arkansas and Yazoo river. If Columbus fell, the fort at Vicksburg would only allow you to cross at Vicksburg. A fort in Vicksburg alone would deny Union control of the Mississippi for SW, etc. purposes but only allow crossing at the fort itself.

At least, that's my read of these very confusing rules. Having played TUSCW first helped a lot :)
440 10/26/2020 3:20:00 PM Fall 1863 Confederate Message Chris - just checking my understanding out on the river rules. Polk can't come across into Memphis from Madison because you took out Forts St. Phillip/Jackson, correct?

But, if I built a fort at Vicksburg, which I wanted to do this turn, then I would control the river from Columbus to Vicksburg and would be able to cross there. Is that your understanding?
439 10/26/2020 3:16:00 PM Fall 1863 Confederate Message I think I'm going to concede. Pretty sure that I will lose my capital next turn which would pretty much assure you getting Confederates down to 0 SW.

I think my best chance was early on with a few opportunities and I missed them both. First in the 'On to Richmond' turn if I could have sent my army into Washington on that I might have taken it. Problem was I had a hand full of 1's and so couldn't get the army activated to make it happen. The other missed opportunity was in the Lee end around run on your AoT, but the AoT general at the time, forget who it was hit the 1 roll on the intercept and was able to get out of the situation. Either of those might have changed things....not sure though. Once Grant showed up I was done and you were able to use him effectively in both theatres. I had visions of Lee raiding the West states and blocking reinforcements for a turn or 2, but he never even made it to Louisville and probably would have been more beneficial in the East. Both Lee and Jackson in the West pretty much spelled the end of me in Virginia.

I'm not sure what I think about the game. A few things that I do like are the early pressure the CSA is able to put on the Union. I don't like how it's done though with a bunch of seemingly overpowered leaders. I also like that OOS units give a drm to the other side. That was one thing that bugged me with The US Civil War was that an army could go out of supply and not take any negative consequences in battle. I'm also surprised there are are no entrenchments in this game, where in TUSCW that is a major part of the play, and I think was prevalent especially in the later part of the Civil War. Maybe Herman thinks he already built that in to the defensive advantage in the CRT. What's your overall thoughts on the game? Pretty much the same verdict as when you played the first printing?
438 10/26/2020 2:44:00 PM Fall 1863 Union Message Log file posted. I think you could probably continue to stall for fair amount of time given now difficult it is for the attacker to win battles, but Sherman's arrival next turn should help. Totally fine with calling it at this point 0 up to you. It doesn't seem like there's very much interesting game left, just a Union race against time.
437 10/26/2020 2:37:00 PM Fall 1863 Union Message Van Dorn buys it.

434 10/26/2020 2:34:00 PM Fall 1863 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #111: 2 / Wilsonís Raid
Union may place two Union PC markers in any spaces within four spaces (includes river connections) of a single Union cavalry brigade. The four space range CAN be traced through Northeast Alabama. These PC Markers (in contravention of rule 11.3D), CAN be placed in blockade runner ports/ and or resource spaces devoid of Confederate SPs or forts (but may contain an Ironclad or Torpedoes), resulting in their immediate destruction. Remove from deck if event is played.

Message from Union:
Battering AoM in Paducah.
433 10/26/2020 2:32:00 PM Fall 1863 Confederate Message I agree. Should only be 2 SPs in AoM. Jackson will battle it out and see how it goes. Confederates are pretty much out of gas.
432 10/26/2020 2:00:00 PM Fall 1863 Union Message Hmm... Seems to be some inconsistency on how the cavalry SP are handled. So I think the AoM has a total of 2 SPs - one plus the one that just joined with Van Dorn. It seems like when you moved the cavalry brigade into the army it upped the SPs by 1. Currently the Army is marked with 2SP plus the cavalry SP. Is there something I'm missing there? Anyway, if they just have 2SP AotC will just continue hammering away at them. You can also let me know if you want to avoid there.
431 10/26/2020 2:18:00 AM Fall 1863 Confederate Play Strategy card as Operations #40: 3 / Emergency Call for Volunteers
Union receives five SPs, no more than two SPs in any space. Placement spaces must be friendly controlled, have a LOC and be free of Confederate SPs or forts.

AoM will intercept and fight in Paducah
424 10/25/2020 10:58:00 PM Fall 1863 Union Message OK, Army of the Cumberland moved Cairo -> Paducah. Army of the Mississippi could intercept, maybe not crazy? Otherwise it'll be a battle just against the fort with 0 SP.

I think the CSA has to be riskier and cleverer than I was before Grant comes out. They could pull of a 2x SW win, especially if they can take Washington. If they can't do that I think its a long attritional grind down to SW 0.

I posted my log of reinforcements. I think you might have missed a couple of attrition spots, but check me on that. You can readjust if you would like because of that.

Interrupt enemy force currently moving to no more than one space of movement. (Converting a space counts as movement.) Applies to only one move during a Major or Minor campaign card, but not a special army-naval move.

Message from Confederate:
I don't know if this is right, but I'm playing it. Summer rains bog down Grant's army in Petersburg.

349 10/21/2020 11:05:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #14: 3 / Red River Campaign
May not be discarded by the Union. Union must use this card as an OC. If at the conclusion of movement, a Union SP is not on or adjacent to Grand Ecore, LA, then the Union loses 5 SW points. If a Union SP is in one of the objective spaces then a Union PC marker can immediately be placed to convert the space or spaces. Remove from deck if Union plays card.

Message from Union:
Can't talk myself into attacking Forrest. Losing 4SP in the next reinforcement phase is not nothing, but I can't really rail all the reinforcements I get anyway. So AotP will march into NC. I'll move Petersburg, convert, Hickford Jct, convert, attack Ewell. I don't know what your card might be, but you can let me know if you want to do something before dealing with the evade/battle :) And I'll take a 5SW hit for not doing this campaign.

If two or more Confederate armies are in Virginia, the Confederate player places (Confederate choice) one army (placed, not moved) in a Confederate controlled Resource space (destroyed or not), Riverine port, or Blockade Runner port (open or closed) in Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, or Texas. Remove from deck if event is played.
