92 11/18/2020 9:25:00 PM May-Aug 1942 Japanese Message Hi Mike -

South Pacific it is then! I'll leave the campaign EotS in place for your review.

I am up to speed with just about everything with South Pacific except the specifics of the Vassal module - there are a few differences in the mechanics.

I've drawn cards and I am ready to go when you are -

91 11/18/2020 8:51:00 PM May-Aug 1942 Allies Message Sean
So from a learning perspective Iíve realized I should play the South Seas scenario. Please donít blow up this game we are now playing. I will reread probably like 5-10 more times your explanation of reinforcements. My goal will be to make a card play every other day. Maybe more.
It is necessary to download the South Seas scenario separately. Well maybe not necessary, but it is easier I think. Iím talking about the vassal module. There is definitely less to think about and I am somewhat familiar with the scenario. I have to admit of feeling a bit overwhelmed and realize now that I should have moved that HQ out of the Philippines, not played the ASP card.
Chris Crane wrote a couple of articles about the scenario on GMTs Empire of the Sun page, which each time I read it I understand what he is talking about more and more.
If I didnít think this was such an awesome game I would have given up already.
Definitely take the time to read Chrisí article. Plus it is the scenario that is played at the WBC if you ever get a chance to attend that.
I want to go once and win a game of something. Not be a champion, just be competent enough in something where I could win ď AĒ game.

89 11/18/2020 4:02:00 PM May-Aug 1942 Japanese Message Hi Mike -

Almost perfect - the only thing is you would roll for the 11AF and 13AF units as individual units, not as a pair.

You can actually have an AF LRB unit and the fighter unit split up, with one being sent to Europe and the other sent to the Pacific.

So 6 dice total - but you definitely have the idea -

Sean

3 of the army units would go to the turn track and be eligible to come back on turn 6

86 11/18/2020 1:59:00 PM May-Aug 1942 Japanese Message Good morning Mike -

We can do South Pacific if you wish - but let me answer your questions about the reinforcements process, and you can go ahead and deploy your reinforcements/replacements and we can proceed in whatever direction you wish from there -

For your reinforcements, basically follow the steps in order from paragraph 4.11 -

First you remove all of your units from the delayed reinforcement box, and place them somewhere out of the way in the middle of the ocean so you can actually deploy them later. If I am playing the Allies I normally place my units waiting to be deployed somewhere around the airbase at Canton south of Oahu. As the Japanese I will place them somewhere northeast of Marcus while I figure out where they are best placed.

Then assess the current WiE status, and the current ISR status. If the US is currently under ISR, then all US Army (green units) coming from the current turn's slot on the Reinforcement chart/window are automatically delayed. Allied, Marine, and Navy units are not delayed by ISR.

If the WiE status is at 0 or less, then all Allied reinforcements are delayed.

The only exceptions to this are HQ units, and US Army B-29 units, which are never delayed, no matter what.

Once you determine who exactly is delayed, then you roll a die for each US Army unit to see if it is 'sent to Europe'. Die roll range is based on the WiE level - die rolls for WiE get a -1 DRM if the US is in ISR.

If a unit is 'sent to Europe' then it goes to the turn track as a reinforcement 3 turns in the future. For example - we are at turn 3, so any units 'sent to Europe' are placed on the Turn 6 space.

At this point, if your current turn reinforcements from the Reinforcements Window/Chart are delayed, then all of the delayed units not sent to Europe are placed in the Delayed Reinforcement Box in the SE corner of the board.

If any or all units are not delayed - then they join the units that were previously removed from the delayed box, and are eligible to be placed this turn. Note that in our current situation the 2 Allied HQs (ANZAC and S Pac) that are turn 3 reinforcements are eligible for placement this turn, since they cannot be delayed. If you had used a card to withdraw SW Pac from Manila to the turn track, it would also be eligible to be deployed since HQs cannot be delayed.

As an example - say you played a WiE card during turn 2 and improved the WiE status to a positive 1, 2, or 3. The US is currently not in ISR, so you would be able to deploy all of the units from the Delayed Reinforcement box, plus the Turn 3 reinforcements from the Reinforcement Window/Chart this turn, with no WiE rolls or delays because of ISR.

If you want to go thru the process and see if you understand it completely let me know and I'll help you out. Either way, the choice of how to proceed, with the current game or South Pacific, is totally up to you. I have no issues either way -

Sean

85 11/18/2020 8:54:00 AM May-Aug 1942 Allies Message Again
Thanks for everything!!
84 11/18/2020 8:53:00 AM May-Aug 1942 Allies Message Sean
Sorry for all that....
So I looked back and we started on Oct 27, which was approximately
3 weeks ago and Iíve really made like3-4 moves. None of which were
Complicated. I definitely should not waste your time trying to play the Campaign scenario because I will wasting your time and making myself mad at myself.
If you would be willing I ď think ď I could handle the South Seas scenario and hopefully be able to finish it😃😃😃😃.
Itís only 4 turns and 15 card plays.
I honestly feel like I have a better understanding of the game, but I also realize I have to be able to make my moves faster or it wonít sink into my head..
83 11/18/2020 7:53:00 AM May-Aug 1942 Allies Message Sean
In all honesty....
I wanted to play with the big boys before I took my baby steps.
What I really should do if you agree to it is play the South Seas scenario vs you.
That would allow me to take a picture of the map with my phone and I could study the map when I get a chance during the day and make my turns a lot faster. I need to make a card play almost everyday or I lose track of whatís going on. I need to beat the game into my head.
In the other games I play ( Barbarossa to Berlin) I make all my moves and look at the map on my phone. By the time I get home at night and open the PC my brain is toast
82 11/18/2020 7:10:00 AM May-Aug 1942 Allies Message But
It is Turn 3
So I would have to roll for all the Army units and I would get the rest of the turn 3 Reinforcements also ?
Iím sorry
I know you went over this before
And when you did it made perfect sense. Way more sense than the rules. But the last two weeks have been silly for me and now itís all kind of foggy.
At this point in time I am very frustrated with myself for wasting your time. Itís one of my personality defects.
81 11/18/2020 7:04:00 AM May-Aug 1942 Allies Message Iím starting to get frustrated with myself.
There are a bunch of units in the Delayed Reinforcements Box
I get the Blue ones
I get the Brown Ones
And I have to roll for the Green ones
Is that correct ?
80 11/18/2020 6:47:00 AM May-Aug 1942 Allies Message Nov 18, 2020
This is going to be silly question day.
I have read the rules, more than once, but there is part of me that does not think I really should be playing a level 7 Mark Herman masterpiece. I can do it, but itís going to be painful.
Anyways
I have a Future Offensive Card which means I can go first in the next turn I believe ?

79 11/18/2020 6:24:00 AM May-Aug 1942 Allies Message Sean
Once again I want to say Thanks for playing me

76 11/16/2020 8:56:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Japanese Message Hi Mike - your last 2 card plays were interesting -

The card play to increase ASPs is a pretty good play. You don't have to start worrying about Progress of War until turn 4. Without that play, you only need to capture 3 hexes on turn 4. Now you will need to capture 4 hexes every turn starting turn 4. But your increased ASPs give you more flexibility starting next turn in case you need to move folks around or take a shot at a target of opportunity.

Moving your Carriers to Viti is also double edged - they make an inviting target for me now, depending on how you deploy your forces next turn and how the card draw goes, especially for me. Remember if I knock the US carriers off the map you suffer a -1 political will loss at the end of the turn.
Keep them protected -

proceeding to end of turn procedures - since we both have 0 cards left, and each of us has a card in the future offensive queue

66 11/11/2020 8:07:00 AM Jan-Apr 1942 Japanese Message Hi Mike -

To determine the winner of air naval combat count all of the combat factors - naval and air - so in this case the Japanese win 14 to 3.

The only time that a 'loser' (combat factor-wise) can win air naval is if the reaction player is the only player with air or carrier units remaining after combat.

and don't forget the intel die roll....

But I believe that JP wins the battle because JP has 4 combat factors and Allies have 3 Combat factors in the space at Gili Gili.

55 11/7/2020 1:17:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Japanese Message Hi Mike - one item about your last move -

Moving AVG out of Rangoon leaves a un-neutralized Japanese ZOI at hex 2009, which is the only way to trace supply into Rangoon via water from Calcutta. The transport routes have not been constructed so overland supply is limited to 4MP from the nearest supply port of Dacca.

At the end of that move the Burma Road would close, and Rangoon plus all of the Chinese units would be out of supply. With the Burma Road closed, Kunming is not a supply source.

Let me know if you wish to adjust -

Sean

SEAC is safe all by itself in Calcutta since Japanese ground units cannot enter any India hex beyond Dacca - 'mainland India' - see rule 13.61. They can be attacked via naval or air, but that can't harm a HQ unit just by itself.

Dacca can be attacked via ground or AA however.

23 10/31/2020 7:35:00 AM Jan-Apr 1942 Japanese Message Hi Mike -

If you can get ABDA into Tjilatjap before it becomes isolated then that is the place to put it, especially if there is still an air unit there. If ABDA is placed with an air unit in Tjilatjap then it will send an Allied ZOI to the board edge and can't be isolated without destroying the air at Tjilatjap.

ABDA placed on the board becomes a must isolate/destroy target for the Japanese. If you can't get it placed with your first card play, hold it for later in the turn to see if you can sneak it into play prior to the end of turn 1 so it can immediately be covered with air/ground/naval units arriving on turn 2. If ABDA can't be placed on turn 1 then consider it a pretty good FOQ play since it also cancels Allied ISR.

18 10/29/2020 5:21:00 AM Jan-Apr 1942 Allies Play Strategy card as Event #4: 1 / Arcadia Conference
This event ends a US inter-service rivalry. Flip the US Inter-Service Rivalry marker to its Strategic Agreement side. If the US Inter-Service Rivalry marker is already on Strategic Agreement side there is no additional effect. Bonus: The Allied player receives the ABDA HQ, which is place in any in supply port in Java, Borneo, Sumatra or Celebes. If no such port is available this HQ is removed from play for the remained of the game. Remove from play if used as an event.

When I know that I will not be able to get at my computer for awhile I will give you a heads up. Could be some stretches where I only play a couple of cards in a week.

I definitely liked your commentary during the last game.
I will admit that it didn't always sink in to my semi-thick skull like when you told me I should move SW Pacific HQ.It's ok if I lose in 5 turns. I thought about being the Japanese this game but Have realized I am definitely not ready for that.
