Ah, indeed about time and responding to threats. Definitely a reversal of what often happens for CP in late game... Yep, friendly rematch with switched sides sounds great! Let's take a few days off, but I'm down to start Friday if that works for you. |

For sure! Thank you for the excellent game-- I learned a lot from you! Want to do a friendly rematch? Perhaps switched sides? |
1045 | 12/28/2020 11:15:00 PM | Winter 1919 | Central Powers | Message |
It crossed my mind if I had gotten more time to bring Germans back. But the distractions threw off my timetable to realistically bring Germans home and I never had a good chance to. When the CP is DtRing, the Allies just have to waste time, which is really really frustrating as the CP-- more than once I felt hopeless and helpless just responding to your threats. |
1044 | 12/28/2020 11:15:00 PM | Winter 1919 | Allies | Message |
And that's helpful about SRing a corps to MEF, good point |
1043 | 12/28/2020 11:15:00 PM | Winter 1919 | Allies | Message |
True about time being on my side then, and about your having low odds of taking Basra before I could SR a corps over. But indeed, you took the shot at the right time. Ha about imagining it were T19! In any case, I learned a lot this game. In addition to really enjoying it, of course! And I wish you much luck in the rest of the tournament! |
1042 | 12/28/2020 11:12:00 PM | Winter 1919 | Allies | Message |
Ahh, gotcha about Allenby. Yeah, I felt like I was close there, but either way the main benefit was the distraction. But I didn't do too well combo-ing with CAU. Definitely makes sense about DtR margin. Yeah, for a while I thought you'd make a late-game stab at breaking out of Stras, but then it became clear there wouldn't be time for GE armies to transfer over. Ultimately it seems like keeping WS low was a good call for you, but I was especially afraid of trench-busters against Metz or Nancy. |
1041 | 12/28/2020 11:11:00 PM | Winter 1919 | Central Powers | Message |
I don't think you were wrong on the NE moves; at the time, time was on your side. It was a very back-and-forth game. And the play was masterfully done. Even Basra was just a 1/3 shot on my part, so I don't think it's crazy to not respond. One thing that may have helped was SR'ing a corps to MEF4; that prevents me from just taking the shot at destroying it and freeing up 2 corps. Gosh, I'm shuddering to think if this were Turn 19. |
1040 | 12/28/2020 11:07:00 PM | Winter 1919 | Allies | Message |
That's so interesting to hear your perspective on how it felt! Yeah, I was surprised you didn't take any more corps in the turn before I eliminated the army, but the options were certainly all unideal. Also makes sense about going all-out earlier. I think maybe some of my NE moves just wasted time. I didn't actually expect to come so close to breaking apart the West. The decision to SR a corps to Sinai area instead of Basra was a mistake; I thought I might be able to mount an attack only if I had another corps, but I should've been playing more defense. |
1039 | 12/28/2020 11:05:00 PM | Winter 1919 | Central Powers | Message |
I thought I would destroy you too-- but your Allenby offensive really threw me on the back foot. I had to spend a ton of ops/SRs to contain him right when I didn't want to. Yeah, when I realized how low WS was, I made the conscious decision to play low and make you burn it up. With 6 German armies in Russia, only a matter of time before it collapses. The problem with DTR is just how close to the margin it is. Even if I took everything in Russia + Belgrade, I would lose if you take Strasburg. So I have to hunt for 2 more VPs and they're really tough to get while also taking out all of RU |
1038 | 12/28/2020 11:01:00 PM | Winter 1919 | Allies | Message |
That guidance definitely makes sense, thanks! I can espeically see the importance of Strasbourg, and how much better off I would've been if I could've gotten it early (or really at any point). Yeah, Italy does seem like it was a weak point for me in this game, but of course there are so many things to manage. And I regretted not getting into the Balkans earlier; I held Salonika for multiple turns at one point but then was pressed too hard in Russia. I screwed up SB, but it still would've been difficult to use the second army effectively. Yeah, when I was holding so many cards I was really afraid you'd destroy me in Russia. But it worked out well for me that I created the distractions in NE and the Balkans then. I didn't have Greece planned out in advance. That was shortly after I realized I needed to take WS into my own hands, so I mainly played it for the WS, but I had in mind to set up Valona a bit. And Brusilov was also just for WS. I had originally thought you'd play more WS and try to get Treaty in earlier to shore up the East and attack Italy, and that was also when you didn't have quite as many RU VPs, but then you did well in making me do the heavy lifting of WS (well, also you didn't need as much since you had so many RU VPs...). |
1037 | 12/28/2020 10:53:00 PM | Winter 1919 | Central Powers | Message |
I did do it out of necessity considering you stuffed my Hammer. Then when you killed the German army, I failed a morale check and needed to be as efficient with my Germans as possible. I hate DtR... I was stressed the entire game trying to get VPs |
1036 | 12/28/2020 10:52:00 PM | Winter 1919 | Central Powers | Message |
RE: DTR, maybe going all-out one or two turns earlier than you did would've paid off. |
1035 | 12/28/2020 10:52:00 PM | Winter 1919 | Allies | Message |
I actually figured you DtRed not just out of necessity :D At one point I was a little surprised you didn't move into Amiens, but it's certainly easy to get overextended. |
1034 | 12/28/2020 10:51:00 PM | Winter 1919 | Central Powers | Message |
As for DtR, that's a good question. I think you had the right idea. My approach is to just hammer on Strasbourg so you pick up all 4 spaces in Germany, then I'd send armies to Italy. I think you can get away with sending 1-2 armies even while hammering Strasbourg so I now have to defend Trent (rather than eeking by with 3 corps for most of the game). The best approach I've seen is shifting French to Italy, Italy to Balkans and just stretching the CP lines. Really have to inflict a ton of losses to forestall the onslaught on the Russians. What really helped was the AH were able to smash through to Kiev rather than having the Germans pound to get through Kovno/Grodno. I think your approach was working well but was one turn behind where it needed to be (if this had gone on one more turn it would've been GG) Your card sequencing was ATROCIOUS. I'm so sorry. When I saw the 2 1-ops I figured what was going on. You made the best of a really terrible situation :( One question: Did you plan on playing Greece the turn I threatened somewhere (and forced you to play Brusilov as ops/event)? |

Aw, well, indeed, thanks! Glad you enjoyed as well--I also haven't had a game come down to the very last roll so evenly. I'd definitely be up for a casual game sometime! |

Wow! What a nail biter and an excellent game. I can honestly say I've never had a game come down to the last roll with a true 50/50 chance for both sides. Really great game-- you're an excellent player and I learned a lot playing you (like how you stuffed my hammer in the west so badly I had to DtR)! Truly, an excellent game that is one for the books! I'd love to get a friendly game (perhaps not quite the same breakneck pace :p ) in with you if you're interested sometime. |

If you happen to have some chance, I'd appreciate any advice on how to respond to a Rhine defense, since I don't have much experience and I wasn't sure how to try to protect Russia. Or other comments on how I could improve. This was a really exciting game, in any case! When I saw my T16 hand had Zimmerman, Over There, and 14 Points, I felt pretty desperate--but then the rest of my WS and US Reinf cards came in a good sequence |
