Final province count notwithstanding, this proved to be a tough game. It was very frustrating to get anything going as Carthage because Hannibal did terribly in battle, except for Avoids and Withdrawing. When he had to withdraw from the opening battle against Paulus, I knew Hannibal was in trouble, as that was effectively a loss. Hannibal never beat Scipio and never scored a true knockout victory, which is critical to Carthage's chances. You never rolled a Retreat dr above 3 during any of Hannibal's wins, most were 1s. That allowed Rome to wear Hannibal down, even with reserves brought from Spain. It didn't help that Mago was terrible at naval movement, failing twice on a dr6. And Rome had some great blocking positions in the north. Still, I managed to get something rolling in Italy and late in the game Carthage started to get the upper hand. Hannibal angled to pull off flanking manuevers twice that opened up the game again after Rome had stymied him. But it was very touch and go many times. Hannibal could have been crushed a number of times in southern Italy. He kept cheating the Fates, though, except when he needed good battle dice. Thanks for the game. I'm sure we'll meet on another battlefield. |

Mike: think that's the corker! Cannot flip enough PC to recover -- think I can turn Etruria and Lucania and then wipe you out of Corsica with the last card, but that brings me only to 6 vs your 11 Good game. My lack of campaign cards and your "theft" cards were particularly damaging Best wishes for your next game |
