This has been a long time waiting.

For Grant's success in capturing Hanover, VA, he had been promoted to command of his own army.

For Army of the Cumberland (AoC) in Grafton, WV (n15).. Burnside is 2nd, and Pleasanton is Cav General.

McClellan continues to complain to the newspapers about this "unjust" appointment.

366 1/24/2021 9:32:00 AM Spring 1863 Confederate Play Strategy card as Operations #105: 1 / Detached Cavalry
Played prior to a battle against an army possessing one or more cavalry brigades. The ONLY effects are the Army’s Commanding General’s battle rating (offense or defense) is immediately reduced by 2 and no Cavalry general’s battle ratings may be used in the battle. The effects end at the conclusion of the battle. Cavalry generals are not available for casualty determination. OR: Place one PC marker in any space within four spaces (includes river connections) of a single cavalry brigade. The four space range many not be traced through Northeast Alabama. The space may not contain an enemy SP or fort, but may contain an Ironclad or Torpedoes.

358 1/24/2021 8:01:00 AM Spring 1863 Confederate Message You've had the 3rd or 4th best hand possible and the worst hand possible in terms of Ops value. Yet, you still made progress and created all kinds of mischief with the event cards. Each event you played was of higher value than the ops value.

On the other hand, many of the events associated with higher valued ops cards are almost nearly valueless. For instance, I think I played a 2 ops card with an associated event that raised CSA SW by 2. The only reason I can see to play such a card as an event is to gain the 2 SW to spring the Foreign Intervention card or as a last play when CSA SW has fallen to zero.

At my novice level, the game to me is more operational than strategic, so I'd like to see more battle cards in the deck. I think it would increase the level of unpredictability in battles.
357 1/23/2021 6:45:00 PM Spring 1863 Union Play Strategy card as Event #66: 1 / Wilson's Creek

May not be discarded by the Union. Union must use this card as an OC. If at the conclusion of movement, a Union SP is not on or adjacent to Grand Ecore, LA, then the Union loses 5 SW points. If a Union SP is in one of the objective spaces then a Union PC marker can immediately be placed to convert the space or spaces. Remove from deck if Union plays card.

346 1/22/2021 9:02:00 AM Spring 1863 Union Message Ahh, I see I got Polk.. Ablative armor at it's best.. :)
345 1/22/2021 9:00:00 AM Spring 1863 Union Message Yes. Even the Union may do that. If they land on a coastal fort, the fort is just under "siege" and doesn't fall until the PC marker is placed (usually end of turn).

However, sometimes the Union will use an OC to place a PC. This is called "fishing for EP", since the fall of a fort is enough to trigger Emancipation, and if the Union can't win a medium / large elsewhere, this may be all they can do. (or they hope that the CSA has it in there hands, roughly 10% change, if you get lucky, its great!)

344 1/22/2021 8:46:00 AM Spring 1863 Confederate Message And thanks. I'm fine with the move as is. I just wondered if I might have gotten a "bonus."

I didn't realize that one could spend an OC and before the PC phase, change a PC marker occupied by an infantry SP.
343 1/22/2021 8:43:00 AM Spring 1863 Confederate Message Thanks. Your explanation makes sense. I understand how it works now.

342 1/22/2021 8:39:00 AM Spring 1863 Union Message Please feel free to take the card back, and change your move..

A division move with a 2 OC would accomplish your mission, but the SPs would have to wait until the end of the turn, or an OC play, to actually flip the spaces.
341 1/22/2021 8:37:00 AM Spring 1863 Union Message The Cav Raid rule isn't a special feature of Cav (allowing them to move around like Pz Brigades), its to actually make them sub-par with infantry SPs.

An infantry SP could remove an enemy PC and replace it with your own (if in supply). A Cav Brigade can remove a PC (even if OOS), but can't put anything down at all. If it's your territory, it returns to your control automatically, but doesn't do much in enemy territory at all. Neutral spaces return to neutral.

But in all cases (inf or Cav) you need to either play an OC to place PCs (with units already in the space), or move units in and wait till the end of the turn.
340 1/22/2021 8:35:00 AM Spring 1863 Union Message Alas, no.. You didn't play an OC to place or remove PC markers, you just played it to move Cav around.

The Cav would have be in the space, and then you play a card to remove the PC markers. Alternatively, you do this at the end of your turn, and the PC marker gets removed automatically (as per normal)..

309 1/19/2021 11:54:00 AM Fall 1862 Union Message Well, Union Cav is a "design for effect"

The Union had lots of Cav, but did it have lots of "effective" cav.

Really, it's to limit the number of offensive axis the Union can advance on to a more historical limit.

But they come back in 1 turn (not 3 like the CSA) and this can be used to switch your axis of advance between turns.

Does give the CSA a chance to react though, with SR and leaders, if you think you know where the new Cav unit is going.
308 1/19/2021 11:49:00 AM Fall 1862 Confederate Message And Iron Bgde for Longstreet is a pretty good trade.
307 1/19/2021 11:48:00 AM Fall 1862 Confederate Message Useful tool.

I wondered how to shift cavalry commanders between armies without spending an ops card, since the shortage of Union cavalry bgdes is an ahistorical element in the game.
306 1/19/2021 11:43:00 AM Fall 1862 Union Message Yes, Pleasanton -> TT (but Union, so he comes back right away).
305 1/19/2021 11:43:00 AM Fall 1862 Union Message The Generals available in the AoNV were correct, per your recollection..

It cost me a lot of men, but I'm hoping the loss of Longstreet will cause you problems in the future.
304 1/19/2021 11:43:00 AM Fall 1862 Confederate Message So did Pleasonton go to TRT?

4th Battle of Hanover LARGE battle

USA: +3 (McDowell, Stoneman, Iron Bgde)

Otherwise, AoNV has +7, and AoP has +3 (using Iron Brigade), large battle.

Over to you to resolve..
