681 1/5/2021 9:15:00 PM Fall 1917 Allies Message Agreed; I think that the NE was really looking like my best bet aside from a series of killer rolls on the West + US armies. So really decided a turn ago to just really go all-in there.

That's good to know. I'm trying to get better at doing early pressure as the AP on the Germans to keep them off balance. It sounds like it wasn't good enough and I need to figure out some of the timing attacks a bit better.

Yeah, I don't think the FR in Italy were used effectively. I had some plans to pound away on Trent while shifting more Italians to the Balkans but you crushed the Italians in the Balkans and it just didn't feel helpful for the 3-op cost I would have to pay. It was also a way to allow French to attack on FR Mutiny turns which theoretically might have been helpful. But I agree, it wasn't really worth it overall. But it did stop any push into Italy-- which is where I've had trouble stopping in the past. Better to just make sure there are no more shenanigans there even if the West is a bit weaker :) You stopped me from creating too many problems.

In the past I've refrained from playing AOI, I just like the 4 ops. You've made me reconsider that and I think I will need to bite the bullet and just bring it in; too much in the NE to rely just on YLD.

I saw the Trench in Warsaw done to me before and it's extremely annoying to deal with as long as the Russians can hold somewhere like Lomza/Insterberg and keep the Germans from massing. It primarily buys some time. Trenching in Sinai is essential imo; just so helpful to stop counterattacks and deterring the Turks from being too bold. Really I think the big moment came when I attacked into Kemal just hoping for a good roll. High risk/reward and fortunately paid off. I wasn't expecting to go to the NE but you had me stumped elsewhere so I was forced to try all sorts of creative tricks to try and comeback! :)

Me too-- I played chess a lot a long time ago and agree with that philosophy. If I don't think there's a realistic chance of winning, or worse, coming really close and losing all the same, I think it's better to throw in the towel rather than prolong the punishment. But that also has to do with me failing my own internal morale check! :P

Let's shoot for a game in a few weeks when you free up! I really enjoy playing with you and learning how to be better! I'm very flexible on timing these days so whenever works for you, feel free to toss me an invite and we can get started! Good look in the MMW and FtP tourneys!

And considering our first game *literally* came down to a 50/50 roll, I'd say that you're going to get the better of me very soon! =D
680 1/4/2021 5:37:00 PM Fall 1917 Central Powers Message Something I just noticed: You didn't leave a corps back to block the TUc in Medina. (It can come out to cut supply, right?) I don't think it would've affected much, though.
679 1/4/2021 5:33:00 PM Fall 1917 Central Powers Message Yeah, was definitely very close until this turn. I think my chances would've been pretty good if NE had held, though progress still would've been slow in RU.

Yeah, that early offensive looked a bit scary, but I was pretty sure AP troops weren't in quite good enough position to break through. But it's tough to be sure, so I was a bit nervous. And I felt pretty comfortable once I had a couple GE armies around Berlin; there was a brief time where it looked like I might not have enough GE armies to cover spots, and before I had a trench in Brussels, that worried me most. And then my thought was that I would probably be fine until you set up in Cambrai and more fully in Ostend. I was fortunate to get early successful trench rolls, which gave me confidence. I wonder if I was not too concerned in general because my West Front goals were unambitious; your offensive felt like it filled the role of making me use resources, though. But always takes tons of ops.

I was surprised to see you move 2 FR armies down to IT. Seems like you probably could've shored up the front more cheaply, and it seems the cost was understaffing Nancy and so there was less pressure on me to staff Stras and Metz. But then you tied up AH resources there, so it had some advantage for sure. I was afraid you'd set up an IT stack and an FR stack against Villach and Trieste and I wouldn't be able to hold them all. Perhaps you intended that and then there were other threats to deal with, which would be totally fair.

Heh, thanks, re: Baku! Yeah, figured I had a shot when I drew AoI in first hand of TW. I quite like to go for Baku when possible to make TTC easier, and to give a shot at Basra. And worked out well this time, until...well, y'know :)

Your Russia play was quite nice; the trenches in Insterberg and Warsaw took a lot to surmount. (I haven't often seen trying to get one in Warsaw, but it's a nice spot for it.) And you used Allenby very well, of course. The trench in Sinai is a good call. What threw me off, in part, is that you didn't send any BRc to NE for a long time, so I felt like I had breathing room (hence why I didn't hold Kemal), and then a bunch arrived, as Allenby was starting to get rolling, and Kemal came back a bit too late to help slow the tide. So I should've played more defensively.

And indeed, well, I do think it would be interesting to see how much I could get in Russia and if I could get RO, but I think progress in RU would be very slow going, so not as interesting as otherwise. I cut my teeth on chess, so I'm all for resigning when one actually thinks it's over, but I respect those who like to play it out, either to enjoy their win or to see if they can minimize the loss.

I'd love to play another, but let's put it off a week or two, since I have a MMW and FtP PBEM tournament game starting up (the round starts of multiple bunched up together!). You're a great opponent, very much enjoyed our games! (And one of these days I'll get the better of you :D )
678 1/4/2021 5:06:00 PM Fall 1917 Allies Message No I get it! I think resignation is completely acceptable; nothing worse than playing a game you're not enjoying/not in it. :)
677 1/4/2021 5:06:00 PM Fall 1917 Allies Message Good game! I thought it was really teetering until this turn when Allenby really broke out. You stumped my offensive early game really well-- I felt like I was just throwing troops at you and you were completely unfazed. How did you handle that? What was going through your mind during that early offensive? Going for Baku was a brilliant play and I was cursing my card sequencing as I watched helplessly as AOI just marched to Baku.

Up for another?

676 1/4/2021 5:04:00 PM Fall 1917 Central Powers Message If you'd like to continue, though, fine by me; I know folks have differing preferences re: resignation.
675 1/4/2021 4:34:00 PM Fall 1917 Central Powers Message What I had planned to write in the other message:

Well, I'd be happy to play it out if you'd like, but otherwise I think I'll throw in the towel. I don't really see a way to stop you from getting 4 NE VPs and retaking Baku, then pouring BR and IT troops into the Balkans. If I took RU and RO I might have a shot, but that seems rather unlikely in 6 turns. This has been a very exciting game. Ultimately, putting off YLD, and not taking Grozny and Poti when I had the chance, seems to have done me in.
674 1/4/2021 4:33:00 PM Fall 1917 Allies Message I havenít drawn cards yet, so you can just type out your move from SW/Alpenkorps, then I can do mine; hopefully resolved everything
673 1/4/2021 4:33:00 PM Fall 1917 Central Powers Message Ok, in that case I'll throw in the towel, because you can play for RPs, because even if I deal with threats with a 2-op, you can play for RPs
672 1/4/2021 4:31:00 PM Fall 1917 Central Powers Message Oh no! I'm so sorry, whoops!
