ironclads are very useful... put one in Paducah and the Union is nervous... forcing him to burn one of his precious 3-Op just to eliminate the threat... put one in Louisville (if CSA pc) and you got Union's attention... watch him start building up Bloom... at the min, put one in Sabine and it's acts like a +2 fort for any Union AA. |
91 | 1/6/2021 2:57:00 AM | Summer 1861 | Confederate | Message |
Heh, ops queue as CSA is certainly rare! But good to remember it's an option. Yeah, PCs and div moves makes sense. In this case, I had ironclade and torpedo events, not anything especially useful. |

>>> I don't really know how to prepare for having almost all 1-ops, though, but a defensive setup probably helps. haha, I don't think anybody knows! it hurts the Union player a bit more then CSA ... for CSA, I would see if any of those 1-Op events are useful.... if not, I would do leader re-org, placing PC, division move and even Op Q... then starting T3, with VD in play, you can move something. |
89 | 1/6/2021 2:46:00 AM | Summer 1861 | Confederate | Message |
Well put on those tactical and strategic aspects, thanks! Especially on interceptions and leader positioning. |
88 | 1/6/2021 2:45:00 AM | Summer 1861 | Confederate | Message |
Hm, yeah, I sometimes think I should be going on offensive as CSA before T4, but I guess it really depends, especially on how many SPs one has. I don't really know how to prepare for having almost all 1-ops, though, but a defensive setup probably helps. |
87 | 1/6/2021 2:44:00 AM | Summer 1861 | Union | Message |
FTP is framed as a strategic game with many moving parts... how you allocate forces and leaders will determine what you can do in each theater, but also how your opponent is likely to react... but the battles themselves are more tactical in nature as you'll need to see how to position your cav to intercept, how to properly have your leaders in locations to assist/support/shuttle other units... and all these have to be considered every turn when you look at your cards to see what can be done, what must be done, and what to be done when shit happens... :-) |
86 | 1/6/2021 2:38:00 AM | Summer 1861 | Union | Message |
>>>seems my lack of foresight about the invasion did me in, combined with poor cards and the loss of JJ yes, proper risk management is a big factor in any CDG... you cannot count on having good cards, just average hand... in 1861, CSA needs to marshal its meager resource and preserve its force to stop the Union juggernaut... once in 1862, you would have several turns of reinforcement plus event cards to beef up your defense... with the arrival of Lee and the Dream Team, you can then form your elite army to be on the offensive. |
85 | 1/6/2021 2:37:00 AM | Summer 1861 | Confederate | Message |
Ah, ok, that's helpful. Yeah, I was worried about not having Stuart in the same space as the force and relying too much on the interception, but then I ended up relying too much on retreat rolls. Will try to keep all this in mind! |

>>>What's the best way to respond to that sort of offensive, for the future? Setting up in Richmond instead of Manassas, I assume. And SMing more from the West to leave more SPs to be brought up in the East. Any other tips? Yes, there are 2 school of thought on this... one is like you did, defend forward in Manassas and bring in lots of SM... but this will have to be JJ defending at +2, then having Stu cav brig by itself behind to intercept at +4... then you'll have a net +4 in battle, which is better than AOP at +3. the 2nd school is to be more conservative and safe, by forming the army in Richmond, sacrificing whatever is in Manassas leaving just 1 sp... this way, you buy time to form AONV... AOP is then weakened w/o a cav at +1 drm... also, leave a leader in Charleston, and do the Carolina Express and shuttle 4 or more sp into Richmond in one move... now AONV is pumped up and can go onto the offensive... then you'll have the initiative. |

>>>Oh, I was wondering why you played Ship Island/Key West for ops before Red River Campaign--unless you were sure you were going to use both for ops, would seem to make sense to have the option of playing for blockade later in the turn. because I was going to use Red River to move Buell and 6 sp to strike deep thru AR to reach Shreveport and fulfill the event... this way I also cut AR and TX off. I didn't expect AOP to win and move on... I just want to smack some CSA sp and delay you a bit from forming an army... but then you retreated to Culpepper instead of Fred'burg which is better to preserve your force. |

With very few SPs, no cav general, and US probably taking VA this turn, I don't see a way back for CSA. yeah, you got the best possible rolls there... I figure if we both roll low, I win... roll medium, most likely I win... roll high, then you hold... so odds favor me. either way, you would be wiped out and be forced to play some event cards just to hold on... so I'll still hold the initiative... but when you said you only have 1-Op cards left and no useful events, then yes, Richmond and VA will fall. |

If at the conclusion of movement, a Union SP is not on or adjacent to Grand Ecore, LA, then the Union loses 5 SW points. #3: 1 / Forward to Richmond Union may activate any Union army within 4 spaces of Richmond, VA. The army must enter Richmond or move as close to Richmond as possible, but may convert spaces to maintain an LOC. All SPs associated with the army must be moved (no dropping off SPs), except 1 SP may be left if the Army began its movement from a fort (if last SP, move completed). If played by the Confederate, he draws a card from the Union hand which is discarded, and the Union player follows the instructions of this card as his next card play. Message from Union: don't ever use this card as Union event that often! but in this case, not bad... AOP [11], 1. convert Culpepper ...
