I have no strong feelings about Harvey. If you're still playing with Dave T and want to ask him, I'm happy to go with that. Otherwise, suggest rolling a die: 1 = replacement appears this turn; 2 = replacement appears next turn. Yep, played the original Kingmaker at school. Could even have been useful if we had studied the Plantagenets in History. Not sure I even knew what a wargame was back then. Meanwhile, better let Old Bory retire to his tent. All yours. |

Napoleon's strategy was different. He wasn't trying to secure resources, he was trying to strangle Britain's trade. British finance was behind pretty much all the wars with revolutionary France. Therefore, if Britain could be prevented from trading with all the countries that mattered, it could not find the money to subsidize their wars. No more money to subsidize wars, and Austria, Prussia, Russia etc couldn't finance their forces. So, as Napoleon saw it, peace must follow. |
1337 | 8/10/2023 7:34:00 PM | Turn 13 | Shannon M | Message |
It's not that bad for the CSA, really. CP table use is at 20. It will be at least 23 after this turn. You need 50 points ahead to continue past T17 To get marginal victory you need to have 75 points more than me. To get a substantial victory it needs to be 90 points or more. So, if the game ended right now it would be a CSA victory. See 17.4 |

That is a similar alleged issue. More jobs but they don't pay enough. I think the truth is somewhere in between as I see plenty of jobs posting on LinkedIn which are higher end roles. |
1335 | 8/10/2023 7:19:00 PM | Turn 13 | Jeremy R | Message |
At last, a big +6 DD. No combat, but still not good news for the Confederacy. I guess when it comes down to it, both the first and second world wars were about the struggle for resources. Apart from coal, Germany has precious few. Therefore, it had to expand its control one way or another. Going north guaranteed access to some to some minerals, but not enough. However, after Norway, Germany had no realistic hope of invading Britain, so the USSR was the only viable alternative. Hitler was well aware of it - you only have to read Speer and Warlimont. The most interesting thing is how many of Germany's military failed to realize it. Japan was in a similar situation in WWII. It had managed to access mineral through its annexation of Manchuria, but it still lacked the magic elixir. --------------------------------------------------------------- Haven't talked to job hunters for a while, but the job market still seems relatively buoyant. The big problem is that a lot of jobs just don't pay well enough to meet British expectations, so we have plenty of jobs that British people won't (or can't) do and EU nationals are no longer allowed to fill them. Nevertheless, despite pretty much everyone's forecasts, Britain has not gone into a recession. Whether China's economic problems will have an effect, I don't know. All yours. |

Tech job hunters are alleging it's harder but it's hard for me to determine. Need a couple more months. This was all coming. The central banks have been printing lots of currency but not backing it up with value. So most people in the industry are scared or worried about a recession . . . though Americans have been harping about a recession for almost a year. It's likely we are in a period that is different from others so it's hard to say. |

It's like the criticisms against Napoleon going into Russia. Napoleon wanted to knock them out of the fight before others got involved. Not a bad plan even if the execution became disastrous. Hitler had a good chance or so he thought at the time. |

Got fed up of being pestered people trying to sell me stuff and agencies trying to boost the number of people on their books. How's the economy? Lots of people complaining about inflation and rising interest rates and blaming it on us leaving the EU (about which I was disappointed, but not devastated). However, Deutschland's rates aren't far behind, and I remember much worse in the nineties. I think the real problem is interest rates were kept very low for so long after 2008 and people just thought it would go on like that forever. (And, for that, I blame Mark Carney, the previous governor of the Bank of England.) Still, I wonder if this guy has any to spare: https://uk.news.yahoo.com/kentucky-man-finds-hoard-civil-200710575.html |

Williamsburg is much more interesting than Richmond before the American Civil War. It used to be the capitol of Virginia. Then they moved it in 1780. This trip to Virginia was more focused on the 4th of July events and pre Civil War history. Last year I went to many Civil War sites. I have toyed with moving there for more affordable real estate but I suspect it's unlikely. |
