The UK's has always had a difficult relationship with the EU. For centuries, Britain's foreign policy was to maintain a balance of power on the continent, but when the EU formed, there was nothing to balance against it. But, for most of the time we were in the EU, leavers were mostly regarded as a bunch of right-wing nutcases. When push came to shove, I couldn't get that worked up about Brexit, so am probably not a good person to ask. Boris screwed up the negotiations, so think it's probably a bad thing economically. The UK's political clout will also suffer. On the other hand, the EU made a mess of its Covid response; the UK paid in a lot more than it got out; the EU bureaucracy is pretty bad; and Merkel boosted the leavers' case by unilaterally allowing a million + refugees in (once people get an EU visa, they can go anywhere). You pays your money and you takes your choice. |

What I don't understand about Ukraine is why Putin hasn't used more airpower. The pictures I've seen don't compare to Yugoslavia or Iraq. Maybe he was trying for a coup de main to limit damage. Had to laugh about Putin's claim to have upped nuclear readiness in response to comments by our Foreign Secretary. Hardly anyone in this country takes her seriously, and most people think she's a joke. |

The Union can live without the AoSW or AoJ (I don't always build them), but doubt the Union can win if it loses the AOC or AoP. Even losing the AoT would make things tough. For now, though, the Union contents itself with feeding in reinforcements. All yours. |

Getting trapped against a nav river can be disastrous for the Union. I've seen it happen a few times and if it's the AOC which is lost, well, 90% of the time the Union player concedes. |

It seems a very strange war to me. Don't know what the media has been like over there, but, in the UK, it almost seems like the news channels have been deliberately trying to ratchet up tension to make it inevitable. It has also (very conveniently) diverted attention from the domestic scandals Boris Johnson was embroiled in - as late as a week ago, it was widely forecast Johnson would be forced to resign. Of course, I deplore the action, but I also wonder what Putin is looking for. I have no doubt he has enough troops to take Ukraine (fighting in the capital within three days is not a good sign), but I don't think that 130,000 are enough to hold it against widespread insurgency. There again, perhaps I'm seeing it through the prism of all the games I play. |

COIN games seem to be an acquire taste for the old school wargamers. They're pretty divided in liking it or not. I wanted to like US Civil War as they had put cards into the game to reflect the political problems (i.e. bad generals with connections, opposition to the war) but no cigar. |
533 | 2/25/2022 2:39:00 PM | Turn 5 | Jeremy R | Message |
I did look at the rules for the US Civil War. Thought there were some good ideas, but didn't like how it handled leaders. However, have to wonder about a game that requires three editions. I have nothing against the COIN system itself - have never investigated them - it's just that I'm not interested in the subjects they cover. All yours |

It's the wrong year and the wrong place, but, just as he should, Grant marches round Lee's right flank. I'm also playing (online) with someone who hasn't played TCW in years (and only with the first edition rules). He thinks the map his fine and prefers it to the US Civil War map. A long as the game is good, I'm not that bothered - I have enough bad games with nice maps. I know they're popular, but don't own and have never played any of the COIN games. Perhaps I will one day, but, at the moment, will be happy if I can get my head around Lion of the North. Apologies for the delay. I had a first-round with the Google Overloads and passed it. They gave me three weeks out to pick ten dates so I figured I'd be interviewing the middle to end of February. Instead, as I was finishing a work week with a lot of crunch, they contacted me Friday morning and told me I'd be interviewing on Monday. Not so bad I figured but then they gave all this homework prep and so since their comp is so high I'll play their game and prep. It's a long way of saying my moves will be slow to null until my Monday interview. |
