55 9/9/2021 5:42:00 PM Turn 10 Stephen Message Jeremy, that's the original Guadalcanal published in 1964. It uses step reduction and artillery fire while the variant ("Augmented") under BGG introduces the naval units that participated. Could be fun. It has been awhile since I have played.
54 9/9/2021 5:29:00 PM Turn 10 Jeremy Message Think I still had a good chance of defending Centerville, but, for the Union, that's not enough, and I couldn't see me getting to any of the victory hexes without Sherman. Have to think of something else.

Think part of the problem I'm having is that I've recently been playing a lot of games without ZOCs, so I'm not paying them as much attention as I should. But, yes, you're right: low-odds attacks against doubled defenders can be deadly. On the other hand, I could see the Union attack was already stalling, so decided to go for it. (As Shelby Foote said of Lee: he took chances because he had no choice. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.)

Ah, so I was right about Mark. I know him from playing Anzio (in the days of PBM). He's a nice guy. It's not like him to just disappear. I hope he's back soon.

Is that the original Guadalcanal game (never seen that one) or the one that AH produced in the nineties?

53 9/9/2021 4:28:00 PM Turn 10 Stephen Message Hi Jeremy.

I look forward to starting our 2nd game. I will send my opening setup soon.

I can see how my 3-to-1 counterattack on Sherman was deadly especially with the brigade being surrounded.

Mark Bayliss and I were on our 13th game of Bull Run when he got sick and then a couple turns later I lost complete contact with him! My further emails went unanswered and the AREA manager had not heard from Mark either.

With my many recent games I have become aware of being attacked or defending in a NON-doubled position. A couple times Mark Bayliss would sometimes in late turns attack at 1-to-1 or 2-to-1 if my forces were not doubled. I have found that attacking at those odds against a doubled defender can be VERY (too) costly for the attacker.

Yes I recently ordered two sets of counters from Limey Yank Games. Great work he is doing. My next order will be for the CTW leaders and a Variant I recently saw for Avalon Hill's Guadalcanal.

52 9/9/2021 2:50:00 PM Turn 10 Jeremy Message Hmm, nicely done. Barring a miracle, it looks like the Union can't win this one, so I'll resign. It looks like your games with your previous opponent made you pretty good (or maybe I'm just pretty bad). Anyway, if that's OK with you, I've already uploaded a CSA set up. I'll try to do better with the CSA.

I mounted the variant counters from The General myself, but I haven't bothered with the third-edition leaders. However, if you do want them, Andy at LimeyYankGames is good, even though he doesn't seem to have any sets of counters I'm interested in. :-) I think he's in France at the moment, though, so it may take a while.

P.S. Out of curiosity, was your previous opponent Mark Bayliss? If you'd prefer not to answer, that's fine.

51 9/9/2021 1:17:00 AM Turn 10 Stephen Message Thanks for the VSAV for The Civil War. I will check it out soon.

In a couple weeks I will be printing out some leader counters to go with the Variant leader rules. Lime Yank Games provides an excellent counter service.
50 9/9/2021 1:13:00 AM Turn 10 Stephen Message Hi Jeremy. Sorry for the couple days delay. Tuesday and Wednesday are heavy work days.

My forces converge against Sherman's Brigade while my 1st Virginia continues to live a charmed life.

Still reading TCW's rules.

46 9/6/2021 4:30:00 PM Turn 9 Jeremy Message Forgot to mention about the TCW module:

For some reason, the module sometimes duplicates counters when you first open a file. Just delete them; they don't appear again.

You may get a warning message saying the code will soon be out-of-date. Close the warning, it has no effect.
45 9/6/2021 4:25:00 PM Turn 9 Jeremy Message Progress, but could be better.

I have also uploaded a TCW file with the variant counters set up in the Leaders windows. There's not much to it: just place one of the available variant leaders as a replacement when one of your existing leaders dies. They then behave the same way as the leaders originally in the game.

41 9/6/2021 Turn 9 Stephen Message Jeremy, no combat/no rally this turn. ..Yes Bartow repulsed your Noon attack. Bee has taken up the position with Bartow defending on the main road.

I will have to check out the Variant leader rules to get an idea of how they work...
40 9/5/2021 11:56:00 PM Turn 8 Stephen End Turn
39 9/5/2021 7:32:00 PM Turn 8 Jeremy Message That was a lot of effort for no result. Oh well. :-(

I normally use Skype or Discord for calls, but, if you have a preference, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

A lot of people think the Variant Leader system is a requirement for the TCW third edition because it is possible to run out of commanders. I have never found it to be a problem, but whether that's down to luck or the way I play, I don't know. However, I don't mind playing with them because they are more historical (for example, Sheridan starts as an infantry commander). I'll play with whichever you prefer.

37 9/5/2021 9:49:00 AM Turn 8 Stephen Message Hi Jeremy, just for clarification your artillery in the ford hex near CSA Cocke's brigade should be limbered (mobile), not unlimbered (battle), since they just moved there. Rule 5.3 prevents artillery while in Battle mode from moving into a ford.
36 9/4/2021 9:54:00 PM Turn 8 Stephen Message Sounds good talking by phone once I have done a read through on the rules for TCW. So do you use just the original counters when playing or do I need draw up a few additional leaders, etc?

At Bull Run western confrontation, my forces dig in at the center, while Cocke launches a counterattack on my right. Meanwhile Richardson's proves a problem on the left...

31 9/4/2021 6:41:00 PM Turn 7 Jeremy Message Still on a go-slow thanks to your tactical withdrawal, but at least McDowell hasn't fled the battlefield yet.

Let me know if I can help with TCW: there's only five hours difference between us, so it shouldn't be too difficult to set up a call. When you're ready, I suggest playing a few turns so you can get used to the tactics.

30 9/4/2021 10:05:00 AM Turn 7 Stephen Message Hi Jeremy. No combat this turn as my forces withdraw to the Henry House vicinity.

I forgot I also have A House Divided.

I will print off the 3rd Edition rules. Thanks for the link to the differences between the two editions. I might take me awhile to "grok" all the rules after a long hiatus. I think I will begin reading my 1st Edition rules until I can print off the 3rd....
29 9/4/2021 10:00:00 AM Turn 6 Stephen End Turn
28 9/3/2021 5:26:00 PM Turn 6 Jeremy Message I've got a few strategic ACW games: A House Divided, For the People, and War Between the States, but I still go back to Eric Lee Smith's version. I did think about GMT's US Civil War, but it attracted a lot of criticism, and I guess a lot of it must have been justified because it's already on its third edition.

Anyway, for the differences between the first and third edition rules of The Civil War, see:

One other thing to beware of: the current VASSAL module only works with VASSAL build 3.5.7 or earler.
27 9/3/2021 5:09:00 PM Turn 6 Jeremy Message Thanks for overlooking McDowell, but I'm happy to count it as a loss if you prefer - it will teach me to check better. Otherwise, assuming you want to beat me more slowly, I had to split the turn between the move and the combat because I needed to reboot half way through.

22 9/2/2021 8:15:00 PM Turn 5 Stephen Message Jeremy, Turn uploaded now! Facepalm. I have to get used to saving directly to BOX when saving my turns.

I will investigate the 3rd Edition of The Civil War. Its my one and only strategic level game on the ACW. Stephen
21 9/2/2021 3:42:00 PM Turn 5 Jeremy Message Hi Stephen

Did you upload your 10:30 log file to Box yet? I'm not seeing it at this end.

For The Civil War, I use the third-edition rules. They're not perfect, but think they make the game more interesting. I will use most of the optional rules - I even add my own sometimes.

I was unsure about how well TCW played by email, but, using ACTS, it's not bad. The main thing is the last side in an impulse rolls for the next impulse's initiative. I even tried playing two games simultaneously with the same opponent - one Union, one Confederate - using the same initiative rolls for both. As well as ensuring balance, it was interesting to see how the games diverged.
20 9/2/2021 9:31:00 AM Turn 5 Stephen Message Jeremy, I decided to attack first. Should be interesting.... Are you using the straight The Civil War rules when playing or one of the additions I have seen. I might want to play you but I would have to bone up on the rules first. I did not Victory Games' The Civil War could be played by email. Thanks. Stephen

16 8/31/2021 5:44:00 PM Turn 4 Jeremy Message The Rebel cavalry sacrifices itself, but the Union continues its advance...

Haven't played a Blue & Gray game for years. Toyed with the idea of retrofitting the Across 5 Aprils system to them, but never got round to it.

Oh yes, South Mountain: another game that's languished on the shelf because I couldn't find an opponent. West End produced a lot of nice games in the day - I have quite a lot of them, including the other two ACW games. Always wondered why they didn't do Gettysburg with the same system.

I'm playing a couple of VG games on VASSAL: Lee vs Grant, live; and The Civil War (still my all time favorite) PBEM. Also, slowly getting to grips with GMT's Death Valley as time allows.

13 8/30/2021 7:25:00 PM Turn 4 Stephen Message Jeremy, I am playing in an SPI Blue & Gray Quad tournament. Also I recently made a West End Games "South Mountain" vassal module but I have not played the game in years... I tend to like most games that allow PBEM. I haven't done much "live" vassal play, and it has been awhile since I have played FTF. What games are you currently playing? Best, Stephen

10 8/30/2021 6:09:00 PM Turn 3 Jeremy Message Think the propaganda may be working - am already beginning to think I may be more of a McDowell than a Grant. However, the good thing about cardboard soldiers is that they don't leave cardboard widows and cardboard orphans, so we're going to let you sleep for another 30 minutes.

Yep, I've got those Generals somewhere - perhaps I should read them again sometime.:-)

Do you play any other ACW games? I made the mistake of reading Manassas to Appotomax recently, now I'm play three different games and trying to learn another one.
9 8/30/2021 10:56:00 AM Turn 3 Stephen Message Hi Jeremy. Yes I have that issue of the General (22#5). Interesting article but lacking details/insight Iwas hoping for but I believe the only article anywhere on Bull Run strategy. Then there was the Series Replay in issue 20#5 with the very aggressive CSA strategy...
