Because it also covers the Overland campaign, took a quick look at Grant takes Command. You're right: the GCACW games are definitely more complex than Lee vs Grant (though, it's not helped by the all the references to previous games in the system).

I know people say that Lee vs Grant was the start of the GCACW series, but (again) I understand the rules have changed quite a lot. I do know it now covers large swathes of Virginia though. You're welcome to eavesdrop as long as Pete doesn't object. We're starting in about 10 minutes.
26 9/13/2021 6:14:00 PM Turn 5 Union Message My troops are still maneuvering over Bull Run as my far right battles Rebel cavalry.

Cool about you and Pete playing Lee vs Grant! I see its technically considered the 1st game in the GC series. Its inexpensive to purchase so I might buy it in the next couple of months.

23 9/13/2021 4:42:00 PM Turn 4 Confederate Message Altogether too many choices ...

I'm like Lee vs Grant, so the GCACW series is climbing up my list of games to look at. I'll probably stick to original AH versions, though, because the MMP games seem expensive. (I used to like the Gamers stuff a lot, but I have been put off by their continual re-working their own games.)

I wouldn't worry about playing live without video. I don't have a camera on the machine I use for games, and it's not been a problem (even when teaching people to use VASSAL). Pete and I will be playing Lee vs Grant live without video tomorrow nignt.
22 9/12/2021 5:55:00 PM Turn 4 Union Message Great Battles (SPI & GMT) I will watch from afar for now but I might download the latest rules to examine the activation system.

Do you play Great Campaigns (VG and then MMP?) I sold off mine but sometimes think of picking up some inexpensive 1st editions to check it out again.

Yes Pete Manning is working on Stones River for A5AII. I did Chickamauga while Derek did Sevens Pines, Fort Donelson and Antietam.

Too bad A5A cannot be done by PBEM. I have not done "live" vassal for a couple of years. How do you do it? I used to use Skype but I have no camera/video feed for my computer.
21 9/12/2021 5:45:00 PM Turn 4 Union Message My entire army is on the move. I was surprised to encounter Cocke's brigade deployed so Sherman so can only face off against him.

15 9/12/2021 11:22:00 AM Turn 3 Confederate Message No, you hadn't mentioned the A5A II project. And it includes Chickamauga, too - my favorite of the big battles. (I haven't played the original in a very long time - must break it out again.) I know next to nothing about Prairie Grove, so can't comment on that, but, there again, I knew nothing about Bentonville when I bought A5A.

Even more amazing: you're doing it with Pete Manning - the man with whom I'm playing Lee vs Grant. (He mentioned he'd been working on something, but I don't think he said who with or what it was.)

Stonewall, Wilson's Creek, and Cedar Mountain were all S&T games (SPI anyway) using modified versions of the original TSS rules. There have been at least two major system changes since then, so you might have trouble recognizing it as GBACW. Brigade activation is now by chit, and the chits are governed by leader ratings at each level of command. I suppose Into the Woods is theoretically GMT's update of SPI's Bloody April, but, really, it's a different game. If you're interested, I recommend you download the living rules from GMT's site. The latest game, Death Valley, is probaly a good place to start because it covers a lot of battles from the 1862 and 1864 Valley campaigns (including a remake of 1st Kernstown).
14 9/12/2021 11:22:00 AM Turn 3 Confederate Message It's showtime...

13 9/11/2021 10:13:00 PM Turn 3 Union Message Hi Jeremy. You had mentioned about converting B&G games to Across 5 Aprils. I do not know if I had mentioned that I with the help of Derek Dunnagan and Peter Manning were working to get A5A II published. Here is a link to the files; I just thought I would show them to you - I work on them in spurts and it has been a month or more: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1X4QR-VTY3G7NgUJ7G_3XXCsZ-SFJuBgH?usp=sharing

11 9/11/2021 8:53:00 PM Turn 3 Union Message Thanks for the links. I will keep them in mind.

My current projects are Prairie Grove and all action at Harpers Ferry.
10 9/11/2021 8:52:00 PM Turn 3 Union Message Hi Jeremy, so Into the Woods is the new Shiloh game?

I have the SPI Stonewall (Kersntown), Wilson's Creek, and Cedar Mountain. So is the system essentially the same today?

8 9/10/2021 7:15:00 PM Turn 2 Confederate Message Evans falls back slowly in the face of the Union onslaught. Meanwhile, Bee tries to think of a snappier soubriquet for Old Blue Light.

There's all sorts of good stuff on Project Gutenberg: Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire; Charles Oman's History of the Peninsular War. The problem is finding it. Here's some of the ACW books I've discovered:

https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/57383

https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/38418

https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/52121

https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/12233

By the way, not all Project Gutenberg sites are the same. Australian copyright is only 50 years, so their PG site has some more recent books.

I have Kernstown from the Blind Swords games, but I had to give up on it when I bought Death Valley - I kept getting the rules confused. Will pick it up again at some point, but it may be a while because I've got Into the Woods on pre-order. The front covers of the Blind Swords games would (with others) make a good calendar.

Had a quick look at Chickasaw Bayou on BGG: nice map. I assume it was intended to be similar to Rick Barber's? Will take a look at your module when I get the chance. Good luck with getting the game published. Did you try Tiny Battle Publishing. I know The Devil's To Pay uses a version of Blind Swords.

Sorry about the stream of consciousness.

7 9/10/2021 5:08:00 PM Turn 2 Union Message I will have to investigate that link.

I have come across it before but I had no idea it contained memoirs of the Generals.

I did a forever unpublished game on Chickasaw Bayou - I did a lot of research on the game but I cannot remember if I had Sherman's entire account of his campaign.

My game uses the Blind Swords system by Revolution. Have you played that system?

Here is the link, there is also a vassal module at the vassal site:

4 9/10/2021 2:04:00 PM Turn 1 Confederate Message The usual suspects are on the move, but, apart from the snoring, all is quiet.

If you have an e-reader and would like a read while waiting for something to happen, take a look here:

https://www.gutenberg.org/

The search engine isn't wondeful, but I have found a lot of ACW stuff on there, including Grant's, Sherman's and Longstreet's memoirs.
3 9/9/2021 10:30:00 PM Turn 1 Union Message Jeremy, my flanking move at Sudley has begun, keeping the rest of your army unawares for now. Despite careful examination I see on looking at my 9 AM turn mismanaged some of my units placement but that is the perils of command.
