687 6/9/2022 6:35:00 PM Turn 9 USA Message Hi Tim, Do you want to keep the log for the game or is it OK for me to wipe it?
686 5/29/2022 7:09:00 PM Turn 9 USA Message Depends what you're looking for. If you want a simple game to play with your son:

A House Divided covers the whole war
Avalon Hill's Bull Run (out of print, but cheap enough second hand)
SPI's Blue and Gray Quads (out of print and but cheap)
Victory Games' Across 5 Aprils (also OOP, but cheap)

The good thing about OOP games is you can often find the riles and VASSAL modules online, so you can check them out first.

If you're interested in particular battles or types of game, let me know.
685 5/29/2022 6:39:00 PM Turn 9 CSA Message What other Civil War game would you suggest? I bought a copy of Rebel Raiders on the High Seas. I plan to get it on the table this week with my son and his friend. They should enjoy the drama of all that dice rolling! Those are the only two ACW games I own.
684 5/29/2022 10:44:00 AM Turn 9 USA Message Hadn't analyzed the situation in such impressive detail, but, yes, you're probably right, the South ain't gonna make it. The North's next step would be an attack on Augusta, to open a line of supply for the AoC. Then, it's just a matter of time before Georgia falls. You didn't play badly, it's just hard for the South to defend against consecutive turns of doubles.
g
Happy to give it another go whenever you're ready - I'll take the South if you want.

Have a good holiday,
683 5/29/2022 10:24:00 AM Turn 9 CSA Message I concede this game. I could continue but it would - in my opinion - be a pointless exercise in futility. The outcome is statistically inevitable. As the situation currently presents itself, the CSA, mostly through folly, is outgunned 121:65 (2:1) overall - 54:22 in the East and 58:37 in the West. (9:6 in TM). Casualties are CSA-35, USA-24 (3:2). This situation will only get worse. The reinforcement schedule from Turn 10 onward is abysmal for the CSA (53:13 or 4:1), which, if nothing changes, will result in a whopping overall 174:78 (5:2) differential by game end. Compared to the overall total ratio of 196:132/142milita (3:2), the current ratio is disastrous. Add to this the numeric advantage in Corps and Naval Commanders enjoyed by the Union and things quickly become utterly untenable.

The existing and future troop counts are simply not viable to defend all that needs defending in order to even glimpse, much less achieve, victory. Realistically, the best the CSA can hope for is an endless stream of low Die Differentials to bleed off the Union CP supply. Strategically, only luck can save the CSA.

Hope and luck are not strategy.

Thus, at this point I truly see no chance of victory, and Davis would be smart and merciful to sue for peace. Save what can be saved before the greed and bloodlust of the barbaric northern murderers and robber barons becomes uncontrollable. Maybe they wont shoot Lincoln.

I have learned much from my mistakes. Your advice has always been spot on, but I had to learn for myself. What a great game. Countless USA initiatives and generous double impulses within multiple 20-30CP turns of growing Union numeric superiority and flexibility of options is a challenge for the Confederacy to withstand. The CSA really must at every opportunity recognize, ruthlessly utilize and intelligently husband every available resource. Even then they are likely to fall short.

Thank you for a great game. Well done. I am of course willing and looking forward to a rematch. On Monday I am off to Edisto Island, SC for a week of well earned rest and recreation with my family. Holiday. Plenty of time for me to thoughtfully strategize how to exact revenge on those Union bluebellies.
682 5/28/2022 6:03:00 AM Turn 9 USA Message Uncle Billy ruthlessly crushes the capital of the Confederacy.

Yep, you have to tailor the size of the force to the situation. In this case, 1 SP would have been enough to recapture the port (and required only 1 CP).

Having said that, placing a couple of SPs in a port is usually good if the CSA can afford it - it gives a medium-size defense force against an amphibious invasion. Unfortunately, it's not such a good idea when the AoP under Sherman is lurking. (And, Sherman had to clear Norfolk in case Pemberton built a fort blocking the supply line up the James.)

Currently AoC (3318) is within four hexes of a depot (3515), traceable outside AoT's reaction radius although through impassable hexsides. Again, I have yet to read any language restricting supply from being traced to a depot through impassable hexsides.

CSA uses third and fourth D6
593 5/10/2022 4:43:00 PM Turn 8 USA Message No worries - things always slow down in the Summer.
592 5/10/2022 9:44:00 AM Turn 8 CSA Message I haven't given up on the CSA. Just have a lot of work right now and wall to wall baseball. And Mother's Day. I have a few days coming up that ate less hectic.
591 5/8/2022 10:11:00 AM Turn 8 USA Message Sorry about the mix up with Petersburg. However, the AoP has halted in Petersburg, and it could have still got there via 5311, so no harm done, I think.

All yours.
590 5/7/2022 7:21:00 PM Turn 8 CSA Message I see. Yes, I had thought of that.
If 5111 (Petersburg) is your intended move, then Lee reacts to 5112.
589 5/7/2022 6:37:00 PM Turn 8 USA Message In the battle, both sides got a D3 so the attacker had to retreat. If Lee had rolled a 1, the AoNV would have to retreat and leave the AoP in Petersburg. If the CSA had won the following initiative, it was possible it could then have cut off the AoP from supply by blocking the hexes east of Petersburg.

The other problem is my mistake - meant to move the AoP to Petersburg after it undemoralized. Will stick with with 5311 is you like.
