Message from Rome: PCs: Druentia Rhone Gergovia If you agree please redo cards. Also, yes Carthage has 4 elephants available, two start with Hannibal, so you have to put two level one elephants in Carthage to represent the level "2" elephant. That is their maximum allowance of elephants. So you could have the four different elephants in four different places, they don't have to stay together. |

Rule 17.1 states: “There are two Carthaginian counters (a total of four CUs) that are accompanied by Elephants. One begins the game with Hannibal (on its 2 CU side) and the other may arrive in Carthage with the play of the Elephant Reinforcement EC.” The Vassal module has 4 elephant counters each with only one side and not flippable. So I have put 2 counters in Carthage each with a strength of 1. |

Chapter 17 goes over elephants and how they function. More or less they act like 2 normal CU in combat, but have the option to also make a special charge before combat that may reduce the number of BCs the Romans get, reduce the number of battle cards Carthage gets, or do nothing. If the charge is used the Romans may play the elephant fright card. |

Each general has two numbers, the one of the left in the blue circle is the activation number, you need to play that value card or higher to move that general, Hannibal is a 1, so any card moves him, 1,2,or 3. Gisgo is a 2, so any 2 or 3 moves him, Hanno is a 3, so only 3s move him. Campaign cards move any general. The number on the left in the square is the combat value of the general, gisgo is a 1. The combat number is used in combat, determining withdrawals, preventing withdrawals, counter attacking, intercepting etc. Gisgo also has a special ability listed in his box. So in short, any card moves Hannibal, and general can move for campaign cards. Mago, Gisgo, and Hasdrubal are 2s, so they move with any 2 or 3 card. Hanno is a 3, so he only moves with 3 cards. Hopefully that wasn't too jumbled and cleared it up. |

After every turn CUs that are not in supply suffer attrition, it might be called "winter attrition". As far as I know that is the only "winter" thing in this game. I think the answer you are looking for is in section 5 of the rule book. So every turn after the last player plays the last strategy card, you check for winter attrition (aka no valid supply line), political isolation, then victory check (which is where you win and/or possibly remove pcs for uneven provinces), end the turn reinforcements, elect consuls, do it all over again. (Reinforcement/consul election was skipped on turn one per the rules). Hopefully that wasn't too jumbled and made sense, happy to answer anything further. |

Did you see the end of turn report I submitted earlier, it went over attrition isolation, province control etc? I don't believe any of the Spanish PCs are in isolation. 19.4 covers PC isolation. Here is the relevant part I believe. "A PC is isolated if the player can't trace a path os spaces from the PC to a friendly CU or a friendly controlled walled city, tribe or port. I believe it can trace a path to itself, Dortesa, Tarraco, and Emporiae, and Nice (next to Massalia) are all ports. So I believe they are all always in supply because they are ports. Before I make my move I'll put the ball in your court. Is that your interpretation of the rules, and are you happy to flip the PCs at Tarraco, and Emporiae as your move? |

I am going to start off with a campaign card. This reminds me of the counter events. This is going to be a bit of a long message so strap in. There are a number of counter events in the game that can be if desired played on your opponents turn. This means you will have one less play later in the round. I believe four of them have to do with movement. Bad weather, two copies of hostile tribes, and storms at sea. In moves where a die roll is involved or campaign cards that involve multiple moves by not asking at the correct time if an opponent wants to play a counter event that player is either giving themselves a disadvantage and/or giving the opponent an advantage. That being said since this is for fun, I don't mind revising moves or adjusting to as fair of an outcome as possible since mistakes happen, but in preparation for potential games in a more competitive setting lets see if we can do this properly. Here are some of the ways that not asking for a counter event could hurt a player. Bad weather stops a general on the second space they moved to, so if they were going to move more than two spaces and do a siege the opponent would get to see the die roll if not asked for the counter event. So a player might not use the bad weather if the siege roll is poor, when they would have if not knowing the roll, or use the bad weather to negate a good siege roll Hostile tribes forces an army to undergo an attrition check. I don't think there is anyway to get across the alps without going through Ligeria and/or Gallia Transalpinia. So instead of undergoing two attrition checks, if a player plays the hostile tribes card, the moving player may decide it isn't a good time to go over the alps. Lastly storms at sea requires an attrition check before the naval die roll is made. If a naval force is sunk and all CUs lost, a player may decide not to play the storms at sea when they normally would have. That is not all, but that is a decent list of why asking for the appropriate counter events is important if they are not in the discard pile. Keep in mind that because of truce the deck was reshuffled, so all four of those events (including the hostile tribes card you used last turn) are back in the deck. Let me know if you have any questions about this or other things. With that said I am going to use a campaign card. |
