289 9/4/2023 10:07:00 PM 216 BC Rome Message Well, that was certainly a dramatic outcome to that battle! But that often seems to happen in our games. Is it us; the game's battle system; or a combination of both? Probably the latter.

But consider this. We fought three battles during Hannibal's campaign in northern Italy, with the respective losses to each side shown below:

Mutina: Carthage -1 CU; Rome -6 CUs

1st Ariminum: Carthage -1 CU/1 CU-e; Rome - 3 CUs

2nd Ariminum: Carthage - 6 CUs/1 CU-e; Rome - -3 CUs

In other words, a smashing Carthaginian victory; a drawn battle; followed by a decisive Carthaginian victory. It could hardly get more symmetrical than that.

The net result is that Carthage lost 10 CUs in these battles, and the Romans lost 12. If you add in Carthage's loss of 1 CU crossing the Alps and another 1 CU due to winter attrition, the net losses are exactly the same: 12 CUs each.

And, of course, although you may be smarting at the moment, just as I was after Publius's defeat at Mutina, I know only too well from our last game, when you came back from that amazing 20 CU loss (wasn't it?), that you can never be counted out!

Things are staying very busy at work, and now I have been assigned another trial starting on 7/31 that I currently know nothing about, and neither does my co-counsel. So clearly some late hours ahead.

But I think I have now my mind sufficiently around the Game State now to proceed.

So, yes: Marcellus and his force of 10 CUs will seek to intercept Hannibal in Mutina.

I wound up having to scramble to square everything away at work so I could be on vacation in Italy from 4/12 - 5/1, then came back and was busy again for several weeks, then was away on another short vacation down to the Georgia coast last week (I'm trying to use up the absurd amount of annual leave I accumulated over the last three years ). But I doi want to get the game moving again.
