289 | 9/4/2023 10:07:00 PM | 216 BC | Rome | Message |
Well, that was certainly a dramatic outcome to that battle! But that often seems to happen in our games. Is it us; the game's battle system; or a combination of both? Probably the latter. But consider this. We fought three battles during Hannibal's campaign in northern Italy, with the respective losses to each side shown below: Mutina: Carthage -1 CU; Rome -6 CUs 1st Ariminum: Carthage -1 CU/1 CU-e; Rome - 3 CUs 2nd Ariminum: Carthage - 6 CUs/1 CU-e; Rome - -3 CUs In other words, a smashing Carthaginian victory; a drawn battle; followed by a decisive Carthaginian victory. It could hardly get more symmetrical than that. The net result is that Carthage lost 10 CUs in these battles, and the Romans lost 12. If you add in Carthage's loss of 1 CU crossing the Alps and another 1 CU due to winter attrition, the net losses are exactly the same: 12 CUs each. And, of course, although you may be smarting at the moment, just as I was after Publius's defeat at Mutina, I know only too well from our last game, when you came back from that amazing 20 CU loss (wasn't it?), that you can never be counted out! |

And now Fabius thinks he can tackle Han on the Plains. Han will definitely stay. No defensive cards (used them all last battle) but will be using the remaining elephant. You can roll and then deal the cards and start battle. |
240 | 7/26/2023 10:45:00 PM | 216 BC | Carthage | Message |
Han is very disappointed that Marcellus got away. BUT he was so involved in Probing (he had 6 probe cards) that he missed that Marcellus could exit so easily. And losing one of his elephants wasn't good either. |

#63: 3 / Force March (any general) (Both) Move any General up to six spaces. Message from Rome: I'll play my last card. I'll use this to activate Fabius Maximus, who will move with his 7 CUs from Faesulae to join Marcellus and his army at Falerii. Because I have non-moving CUs there, you may not attempt an interception. Fabius picks up 2 CUs from Marcellus's force, leaving 5 CUs behind with Marcellus. He then moves with a total of 9 CUs into Ariminum. Will you attempt to Avoid Battle? |
238 | 7/18/2023 11:47:00 PM | 216 BC | Rome | Message |
Also, because I lost a total of 3 CUs, I must remove 1 PC. I choose Narbo. |

Oops: correction. Becauser of his retyreat losses, Marcellus's army is reduced to 7 CUs. |

With a roll of 1 and a -2 modifier for a Probe, the result is a further loss of 1 CU for the Romans. Clearly, Marcellus chose his moment well and made his withdrawal very skillfully. He and his remaining 8 CUs retreat to Falerii. Hannibal and his army occupy Ariminium, but they mourn the great beasts lost who have been their companions across so many miles and through such great perils. |

OK, well it took longer to get back to you than I'd hoped. Things are staying very busy at work, and now I have been assigned another trial starting on 7/31 that I currently know nothing about, and neither does my co-counsel. So clearly some late hours ahead. But I think I have now my mind sufficiently around the Game State now to proceed. So, yes: Marcellus and his force of 10 CUs will seek to intercept Hannibal in Mutina. |

Hey, Dave! Sorry I've been so long silent. I wound up having to scramble to square everything away at work so I could be on vacation in Italy from 4/12 - 5/1, then came back and was busy again for several weeks, then was away on another short vacation down to the Georgia coast last week (I'm trying to use up the absurd amount of annual leave I accumulated over the last three years ). But I doi want to get the game moving again. I haven't had time to post many photos from my trip yet, but here's the one that is my personal favorite: https://www.flickr.com/photos/27685985@N03/52887874391/in/dateposted/ I hope you've been well! |
