You played Japan very well, applying the strategies that Herman wrote about in C3i. So, yours is a well-deserved win. Moving from JPN in my first game to the Allies, I felt a bit at a loss of what to do, and made several errors. If you have no objection, could have a rematch with the same sides? |

#43: 1 / Tojo Resigns: Moderates in Power If the game turn is 1944 or later, this card must be played as an event otherwise it is a Japanese option to play as an event, an OC, or discard. Reduce US Political Will by two. The Allied Manchurian Invasion card's prerequisite has been met. Flip the game turn marker from its PM Tojo to its Tojo Resigns side as a reminder. RESHUFFLE: If this card is played as an OC or a discard, reshuffle the Japanese deck at the end of this game turn. This card may not be played as a Future Offensive. Remove from play if used as an event. OC: 3 EC: 0 Message from Japanese: |

I think the move was okay. Here is why: >Intercept! >* 4017 (Truk) : South Seas HQ (Agreement) Activates. 2+2 = 4 Can SS HQ be activated despite the unneutralized AZOI around the battle hex (Buin)? The rule says: "If the intelligence condition is Intercept or Ambush, the reaction player may designate one (and only one) in-supply HQ as the reacting HQ, which may activate units to react to battles. There must be at least one declared battle hex within range of this HQ (this range cannot be blocked by any means); ..." This means that SS HQ can be activated, as it is 6 hexes from the battle field and has a range of 12. The ZOI does not block this range. See the "Charts" in Vassal, which are under the same button as the combat tables, but navigate to the tab "Additional Charts." Top right: HQ Path Chart, right column 'Reaction/Attrition' shows that ZOIs do not block this range. >* 4017 (Truk) : BB Nagato Activates. (same as HQ) >* 4017 (Truk) : CV Shokaku Activates. >* 3615 (Ulithi) : CV Akagi Activates.(northwest of HQ) >* 3615 (Ulithi) : BB Yamato Activates. The activation paths are solely under JP ZOIs (unneutralized, though they wouldn't need to be). So, I think the move was all right. But I wish I had gotten it wrong, because I believe this battle result means that this will be the last turn. My next card play will drop you PW to 1, and unless you have a reinforcements card that allows you to bring back a step of a carrier unit, you will lose another point of PW at the end of the turn. Also, because of this wasted ASP, you are down to 1 ASP but still need 2 captures to make Progress of War. That means another point of PW lost unless you can liberate one of the nations that have surrendered to the Japanese (DEI, Malaya, Burma, and Philippines). Tough break. |

Hmmm ... hey, I had a question. Per 7.26, "There must be at least one declared battle hex within range of this HQ (this range cannot be blocked by any means)." Looking back at logfile 058, your HQ range appears to be blocked by my ZOIs, no? Buin is completely surrounded by my ZOIs ... would your naval units have been able to move to join Battle A? |

AP: 3 = .5x = 18, which allows AP to flip one of the ships, up to the Yamato (18-18), but you may want to pick another ship, with a yellow dot, like the Shokaku (• 14-12) or BB Nagato (• 20-14). I'll go ahead and flip the Shokaku, you can change it later. JP: 8 = 1x = 64 hits. flip: CV Wasp (12/64) BB Miss (24/64) eliminate: CV Wasp (36/64) CV Enterprise (48/64) BB Miss (60/64) Wow. Total party kill. The JP win the A/N battle for Buin. As a result there will be no ground battle, and the M Brigade must conduct PBM. I will stick it in Rabaul. Incidentally, the M Brigade had to pay 1 ASP for the attempt on Buin. I bring this up because in the early turns, limited ASPs are a challenge in making progress of war. If you don't make progress of war this turn, you will drop to 2 PW, which means that the JP will win as soon as India or China surrender or through the play of Tojo Resigns (-2 PW for the Allies). |

A strategic ground move requires a move to a (friendly controlled) port. Midway is only an airfield. Rule 8.44 Strategic Ground Transport An Amphibious Assault Capable ground unit may move from a coastal hex (with or without a port) to a friendly port a distance equal to the distance a friendly naval unit in the current offensive may move. Since a naval unit can move twice its movement allowance if it moves from a friendly port to a friendly port, a ground unit conducting Strategic Ground Transport that starts its move in a friendly port may also double its movement allowance. The path of the move may not enter an un-neutralized opposing Air- craft Zone Of Influence and may not end the move in a hex with an enemy unit. The ground unit must finish its movement in a friendly port. ... |

Before I play a reaction card or roll for reaction, a quick note: The move with the XIV Corp to midway costs 2 ASPs, taking you down to 0 remaining for the turn. (Movement is not strategic because the corps's destination is not a port, 8.44.) I don't mind if you want to reconsider your move. |

Last two air steps are lost. Lastly, one more ASP * Strategic Record Track (2): Allied ASP Marker moves to Strategic Record Track (3) Over to you! |

After replacements, you'll also roll for submarine warfare, to determine JP hand size, which will drop to 6 if you make the roll. Modifier: -4 (game turn) +1 (1942/faulty torpedoes), must roll 0 or less after modifiers to reduce JP hand size to 6 and reduce JP ASPs by 1. US hand size is 7. |

Eliminated units that can be brought back as replacements (no yellow dot) are in the box with a blue US and white JP unit and a single red slash through it, the third button left of the Markers button in the toolbar. (The double red slash shows you permanently eliminated units, like the Dutch.) Also note that the reinforcements window (blue counter, right next to the replaceable units button), has a "DEPLOYABLE UNITS" button at the top, which opens another little window, which has a button "dispatch" at the top. If you hit that button, the modul will move this turn's reinforcements to the Delayed Units box (as appropriate), and will move all units from the Delayed Units box to this Deployable units box, so you can place them on the map from there. I'm sure it's fine the way you did it, but wanted to let you know. Also, you didn't have to roll for all units to be sent to Europe, only US Army and airfare and US CVEs can be delayed (not B29s or Marine units). But doesn't matter since none would have been sent anyway. |

Okay, I'll go ahead and close out Turn 3. First up, the Political Phase A. National Status Phase: check whether any nations surrender. 1. Philipines: Surrender because JP control Manila and Davao, 13.22. Allied ground units are removed from the game. McArthur's HQ is already on the turn track. 2. Malaya & Siam: Surrender because JP control Singapore and Kuantan, 13.32. 3. Dutch East Indies Surrender because JP control the seven resource hexes in Sumatra, Borneo & Java, AND controls Tjilatjap, 13.42. (resources hexes are: Medan, Palembang, Bangka, Soerabaja, Balikpapan, Miri, and Tarakan). as a result all Dutch units are removed, and all airfields and ports in the DEI come under Japanese control. * 2318 (Bandjermasin): [Dut Air] is eliminated * 2719 (Kendari): [CL Dutch] is eliminated [19 LRB] in Menado needs to make an immediate EAM - I've stuck it in Darwin for now, feel free to change of course. 4. Burma: Because JP control Rangoon, Mandalay, Lashio and Mytkiyina, Burma surrenders. No units are removed, no additional changes of hex control, 13.52. 5. India: JP control all hexes in Northern India (Dacca, Dimasaur, Jarhat, Ledo, and Imphal. If the Japanese player controls all hexes of Northern India, move the India marker from right to left to the next box in the India Status track during the National Status Segment, 13.62. (India will surrender once the marker reaches the surrender box; the marker will re-set the moment the AP gains control of any Northern-Indian hex.) |
