First of all, compliments because your offensive was really outstanding and thanks for for tips, that's exactly what I was looking for. I agree on you about Calais move. I did that mostly because I was afraid of you attacking Ostend from Brussel and Calais. I was planning to SR FRc away and send a BRc to Ostend to suicide for MO, but then dice vs Paris didn't give me the break I hoped. And I didn't realize I played again BR1. Devil is in the details... If you don't mind, I'd just exploit a little bit your enormous knowldege of the game. After CP clearly committed for Western offensive what is the best response with Russian? At the beginning I was focusing vs AH hoping for a early draw of Italy, then when I saw your big push I started thinking about Russia making you spend other RP with German so I placed in Petrograd in order to attack Konigsberg and then Danzig to force you a placement of another GE army in the east. I just finished a game where I did exactly your strategy and took Paris with Michel. When CP places a T1 in CT and Melun, AP really needs to steal momentum somewhere else otherwise is totally doomed because you can not put T2 in Paris and so you are likely to face 16@15vs9@12 in the best case and taking extra losses on Paris all the time. What do you think it's the best answer to this strategy if CP rolls high? |

That turned pretty brutal. Once I started getting the upper hand, you needed a lucky break somewhere to stabilise the situation, and it never came. I started considering the AV threat when the Brits had their MO disaster, but mostly as a possible way to force inefficient ops responses and block RPs. When I spied your lamentable hand I started thinking I might just be able to actually force it with a bit of luck. It's always a bit nervy whether to actually commit to going for AV, and take the risk of it backfiring and losing out on events and RPs. I was lucky that the only card in my hand that I definitely didn't want to have discarded if the game continued also gave me a VP... Passing up an AH reinforcement I could live with, especially if you were forced to discard Lusitania to extend the game. You asked if there was anything I'd have done differently in your position. Your only move that seemed like a clear cut mistake to me was moving BR1 to Calais rather than to Brussels in T2 AP4, only to then have to spend 2 ops clearing up the multinational stack the next action, giving up the chance to play BR2 for RPs. With BR1 in Brussels, in the worst outcome of the battle there (which is pretty much what came to pass), BR1 could have taken the losses, leaving BE1 with BEF in Ostend. Then play BR2 for RPs to rebuild BR1 and give the French a much needed boost. Indeed, when I advanced a single army into Melun it was on the assumption that you would be too desperate for RPs to take the opportunity to flank it. (And I knew you had BR2 in hand, because you had made the minor mistake of playing BR1 as reinforcement even though you had already discarded it in turn 1, which gave me more info than if you'd brought in BR2.) So it was quite a boon that you ended up passing up RPs, without attacking Melun. Having some extra French and Belgians around may have given you a better chance to survive the awful luck with draws and dice in the next turn. |
