Yoshi: I'm just emerging from a very heavy period at work, including a couple of close to all-nighters. I should be in better shape to respond promptly going forward. The problem with the file was very odd. It duplicated your stacks. I would move a stack, and a copy of the stack would remain in place. When I checked stacks that had not moved, they were likewise doubled. I have never seen anything like this before. I deleted out the extras in the move file I sent you, but I'm still uneasy about it. Maybe we should just update one of the older move log files and then update that? |

I'll accept a siege at Leipzig. I am not quite sure of the details of the error in my last log file , so I would appreciate it if you could fix it and attach it to your email and reply to me. |

Message from Protestant: Move Mansfeld, Thurn, Schlick and their entire force from Budweis as follows: - Prague - Dresden (overrun Saxon unit and convert the space) - Torgau (convert the space) and then to - Leipzig. Place P1s at Torgau and Dresden. Will your force at Leipzig fight outside the walls, or accept a siege? P.S. Something strange happened with your last log file that doubled all of the leader and SP stacks, as well as the VP markers. I cleaned it up; let's hope it doesn't happen again. |

You've correctly calculated Wallenstein's current status on the GRT as a 5. Pillage Phase: I have no pillage locations that I can remove. I'll do a Pillage Recovery Phase roll for you, and you can decide where to remove the pillage markers as a result. I'll also go ahead and draw the cards. Once you remove your Pillage markers, we can commence turn 2. |

Yoshi, I may be missing something, but I didn't see any action on your move file. The result of your Pillage/Looting roll should have been to place a P1 marker on Kasseg and reduce one of your Merc units in Kasseg by 1 strep, either reducing a full-strength unit or eliminating an existing reduced strength unit. |

Just to confirm something, Rule 12.54 says "Must retreat into friendly controlled City spaces if possible, but if not, may retreat into an unoccupied enemy controlled City space (gaining control of the City space at the end of the retreat)." I believe that the catholic army that retreated to Kasseg after the defeat in the battle of Pressburg took control of Kasseg. What do you think? I would put Kasseg under catholic control in the log file, please correct it if I am wrong. |

The Bavarians win, albeit after a hard, close-fought contest. Bavarians: modified roll of 6 = 8 Loss Factors (LFs) inflicted. Protestants: modified die roll of 3 = 6 LFs inflicted. Because each side's units have loss factors of 3, the 2 extra LFs the Bavarians inflicted on the Protestants have no effect. Thus, in terms of losses, this is pretty close to a drawn battle. The Protestants will eliminate both of their (Merc) units, leaving them with 3 Mercs, and will retreat to Levice. You have the choice of making up your 6 LFs by reducing 2 Mercs, or completely eliminating 1. |

No problem, Yoshi. Actually, it's your move. Post # 23 was my second impulse (card play) of the turn. I moved Mansfeld's army to attack Bucquoy in Pressburg. So now that you've taken your losses, it's time for your second impulse (card play). |

31 | 9/10/2023 11:57:00 AM | 1620-1621 | Protestant | Message |
Yoshi, no problem at all about the delay. First, when you're new to a game, you should take as much time as you need to feel comfortable about your portions and your understanding of the rules prior to making a move. We're not in a tournament here, so there is no time pressure. Second -- good catch on the Pillaging! I clearly need to review the rules again, as I am rustier than I realized. (I also just had a real problem initially remembering how to call up a Pillage marker from the VASSAL board.) It will probably not surprise you to learn that Mansfeld's army thoroughly and systematically pillaged the suburbs of Wien on their way past to do battle at Pressburg. So I have placed a P2 marker on Wien. Note that one effect of placing a P2 marker (or accumulating that pillage level) is that it makes it impossible to recruit at that location. |

so sorry for the delay. I will completely remove two imperial veteran units. Also, we may be overlooking rule 11.16 on Foraging. I will make my first move pillaging Pressburg. |

28 | 9/6/2023 11:56:00 PM | 1620-1621 | Protestant | Message |
Wow. Unbelievable! Clearly, your 3-0-3 was in the very forefront of the fighting. Under Rule 12.42, your Replacement Leader is removed from the game when he is killed. I'll have to await your decision on your losses before I can finalize the move file for the second Protestant impulse. Finally, your remaining units will have to retreat to Kasseg, It is a dead end, so under the game rules, if your units there were forced to retreat again, then they would be eliminated. However, that's mostly intended as a way of getting the Hungarian units out of the game quickly. In real life, there would have been a road connecting Kasseg ad Graz, so I think we can apply a House rule saying that one exists if your units there should be forced to reteat again. However, you have the chance to forestall that possibility by moving Tilly's Bavarians to attack Mansfeld's army in what will become the Third Battle of Pressburg. The war is off to a very bloody start. Given the size of the forces involved and the magnitude of the losses, the Second Battle of Pressburg would have been as large and memorable as any battle in the original Thirty Years War. |

Obviously, a very hard-fought and bloody battle, and a "near-run thing," as the Duke of Wellington would have said. The Protestants win the victory, because they inflicted 12 LFs on the Imperials. The Imperials, in turn, also inflicted a very significant 10 LFs on the Protestants. Because my units all have Loss Factors on 3, I will need to remove three steps. I will eliminate the (Merc) and reduce two of the other Merc units to (Mercs.) Because you must eliminate 12 LFs, you will need to remove four steps from your units. How you do that is your choice. |

The Leader Loss rules (and rolls) are what makes this game so gripping. Even when you assemble a significant superiority and attack, you have to recognize that you may win a victory, but perhaps at the cost of losing one of your best leaders, which may effectively turn the victory into a long-run defeat. But you can't really quarrel with that mechanic: it reflects the reality of the TYW. Think Gustavus at Breitenfeld, for example. The mortality rate for leaders in battle was strikingly high. Still, for most leaders, it's only a 20% chance in any given battle. And I've had leaders who fought a lot of battles but still survived to the end. Others may die in their first combat, like Bucquoy. And I have leaders like Bethlen Gabor and Christian of Denmark who, if they die, their entire army disappears along with them. |

I live in Baltimore. It's an east coast port city towards the northern end of the Chesapeake Bay. It's about 50 miles northeast of Washington, D.C., and about 100 miles SSW of Philadelphia. It was founded around 1730, earlier than D.C., but later than most of the other major East Coast port cities. |

It was a bit of a shock that Bucquoy was killed in action, but my first battle seemed to have ended with a satisfactory outcome at first. Your next move will be at your convenience. Osaka seems to be 13 hours ahead of the U.S. East Coast. Osaka is not a well-known city internationally, but it is a big city in Japan. It was the logistical and economic center of Japan hundreds of years ago. It is approximately 45 km from Kyoto. Which city on the U.S. East Coast do you live in? |
19 | 9/5/2023 11:17:00 PM | 1620-1621 | Protestant | Message |
Oh, and I should add that when a Leader like Bucquoy is killed, his counter is flipped. Your new Imperial commanding general is an anonymous 3-0-3 Leader counter. I think historically, Bucquoy also died in battle fairly early in the war, which is why his counter's survivability rating is only a 7. |
18 | 9/5/2023 11:09:00 PM | 1620-1621 | Protestant | Message |
Also, it's my pleasure to take you through your first game! Don't worry about not having a fixed strategy, although in most TYW games, the moves on the first turn or two -- certainly for the Imperials/Catholics -- are pretty standard: (1) You attack Bethlen Gabor and defeat him, ending the Hungarian revolt; (2) you use the Spanish troops in the Spanish Netherlands to seize the Lower Palatinate; (3) you recruit; and (4) you play any Event card that you think might help you. |

Hungarians roll 7 = 5 Loss Factors (LFs) inflicted on the Imperials; that is sufficient to reduce (flip) one Vet unit to its under-strength side (Merc). Imperials roll 6+1 DRM = 7 = 9 LFs inflicted on the Hungarians; that is sufficient to eliminate 2 of the Hungarian Mil units, leaving 1 Mil and 1 (Mil) to retreat to Levice. |

You are right about BG's recruiting, Yoshi, which underlines an important point: rolling for Militia almost always gets you something, which isn't true of recruiting for Mercs. I'll resolve the combat when I get back to my home computer this evening. By the way: how many hours are you ahead of us (East Coast USA) in Osaka? |

I will send you a copy of the Game Log, but I'm also fine with each of us just maintaining our own boards. Since we're using ACTS, we will always have a record we can check if anyone gets confused. |
