I have got quite a few games, but had heard of virtually nothing on Yucata, let alone played them, so don't think I'll be joining any time soon. No particular reason for playtesting Wilson's Creek other than it's ACW and I have another game in the series. However, turns out to be an interesting situation - hadn't realized Lyon had split his forces even though he was outnumbered 2:1. (ring any bells?) Unfortunately for him, his flanking force was commanded by a Sigel and not a Jackson. All yours. |

So why the great interest in Wilson's Creek? Yucata does the administrative work for you so the time it takes to do a regular move in this game let's you do 3-5 moves. Granted, the games on Yucata are not as complex as this game. If you join let me know and we can play something. |

Think the difference in dates is because we have managed to conflate Mother's Day with Mothering Sunday (a completely unrelated medieval holy day held on the fourth Sunday in Lent, or something like that). But what can you expect from a church that has supposedly managed to name its holiest day after an Anglo-Saxon goddess? I'm not playing many games at the moment. Most of the games I was playing came to an end within a few weeks of each other, and I haven't looked for any more because I have been spending a lot of time playtesting and proof-reading for a new game on Wilson's creek. I did look at Ardennes 44 and Pax Baltica a while ago, but, for different reasons, wasn't keen on either of them. Also, had to suspend learning Death Valley because of the interference with Wilson's Creek. Hadn't seen Yucata before, though, at a quick glance, it looks similar to boardgamearena. Is it any good? |

I've got 30 games on Yucata (Few Acres of Snow, Founding Fathers, Stone Age) - 3 Vassal games of The Civil War - 2 Vassal games of WW - 1 live Vassal game of Here I Stand - 1 live game of Tabletop Simulator learning Napoleonic Wars - 1 very slow game of Twilight Struggle - and a very slow learning game of Nevsky - oh and a Discord chat and Dropbox/Vassal game of Founding Fathers. |

Mother's day was March 14 over here. I guess the card manufacturers have different slow periods in the US and UK. ;-) Yep, a couple of short turns is not enough to save the CSA with good play. However, it's the uncertainty of early ends, plus the number of CPs available that makes me reluctant to bid for sides. All yours. |

You got to do enough on T2 even though we tied out. I'd agree that T3 was a short turn in CP uses but having that happen once or twice doesn't stop the Union player from attaining a marginal or major victory. |

Public holiday in UK. A flurry of activity despite Lee besting Grant. Both turns 2 and 3 ended on double 7s. I only found VASSAL, CSW, and BGG in 2019. Judging by the forums and the VASSAL server list, though, think there are still quite a few players of TCW. Not bad for such an old game. A while ago, I volunteered as a playtester, and the first game kit has arrived: Wilson's Creek. Lyon is getting hyperactive. |

Yeah, Huger is mostly useless as the CSA has so many other options in commanders. During the playtesting they gave Little Mac a 4 point initiative but nobody wanted to use him so they made him a 3 in initiative. Later, they put in the optional rules which I generally prefer over the original rules. How long have you been playing this game? I started in the 1980s when my friend brought it over. |

I'm playing DV solo at the moment while I get used to it, but I the plan is to play it on VASSAL when I've got a good enough grasp of the rules. What's it like? I get the feeling it's not that far from playing with miniatures rules. The basic unit is the regiment (or battery). Each regiment is rated by strength, morale and weapon type. The top unit in a stack is at the front, lower units are further back. Units have a front, flank, and rear facing. Regiments are organized brigade, division, and for the bigger battles corps, and army. Divisions are activated by chit selection. The units of one brigade move and fight, then the next brigade, etc until all the division's units have activated. Each division can have from one to four activations per turn. The number of activations available for each unit depends on a randomly selected efficiency chit modified by the commanders' abilities and whether there is a chain of command. Orders can be specified at the start of a turn; units can also attempt to change orders on activation. Movement is governed by unit type, and the brigade's orders (advance, attack, march, reserve). Units can be fatigued if they move too many times in a turn. Fire combat is through frontal hexes, ranged and depends on a LOS. There are several types of reaction: fire, refuse flank, and retreat. Shock follows all fire combat. Units can be disordered and/or lose SPs. Brigades and divisions lose combat effectiveness if too many units are disordered or routed. It's very involved, very tactical and the rules could be better, so it's not that easy to pick up. Also, I don't think it would be possible to play offline because of all the different fire possibilities. However, it looks pretty realistic and there are several youtube videos that help. (Let me know if you want the links.) |
