yeah i was trying to get a fortress in richmond but not enough cps and I was not expecting such a spread in cps at the end. But then that is one of the ways the Union can win b/c it's hard to win if a good csa player can react to all your moves. |

And another turn with no doubles. Bad for the Union, but I guess it's the reason why you didn't have a fortress in Richmond. Hit a small problem: I can't reveal the Union turn 8 priorities because the VASSAL engine changes mean the game thinks I'm someone else. If you can think of a way around it, let me know. If not will go with previous turn's priorities. All yours. |

Yeah, I figured that spread of CPs in your favor would let you do a lot of damage. Jackson will leave with 2 sps to go to hex 5209 joining that sp. That leaves 2 sps and a fort which is an overrun. I might change the move if you had movement points left the impulse. And no sense in giving Sherman and others a possible promotion. |

Hope this log file works - the latest VASSAL update seems to be causing problems. First off, the dashboard lost all my installed modules, so I installed VGCW again and got a message about code not working. Then, installed the latest version of VASSAL, and it lost the module again. Added the VGCW module again and it sort of works, but now insists on prefixing my messages with Newbie. Anyway, fingers crossed and over to you for Jackson's reaction to the AoP's march on Richmond. |

bty yeah it's a volatile issue today and too often some people associate racism solely with the civil war. It was fought for a lot of reasons so we have people arguing that and others arguing that it was only about slavery. And then it leads to modern discussions about racism and inequality which is usually an overly emotional conversation. |

Regarding Kilpatrick this blurb in the rules seems to indicate he has no impact on the army reaction rolls so he doesn't penalize it. [Cavalry] Hugh Judson Kilpatrick: Aggressive to a fault, Sherman requested him to lead his cavalry, and tear up the CSA interior. Has no effect on Army Reaction rolls. TOE: After death or removal of any Cavalry leader; * (2 -1). |

Don't think the 2 vs 1 dead leader rule makes much difference - the replacements just get to die sooner. Not sure Kilcavalry's ratings have been thought through. It defies common sense that a two-initiative cavalry leader makes an army less well informed. However, that's how it looks to me, too. Think Kilcavalry will be getting an independent command if he ever appears. ;) |
656 | 4/18/2022 12:54:00 AM | Turn 7 | Shannon M | Message |
I think the rules used to have 2 dead leaders gets you 1 replacement and then they changed it to 1 to 1. |
655 | 4/18/2022 12:53:00 AM | Turn 7 | Shannon M | Message |
I believe so for Kilpatrick 12.3.15 Reaction Die Roll Modifiers: A Demoralized Army subtracts 1 from its Reaction die roll. An Army that contains a cavalry leader adds the Tactical Combat Rating of the highest ranked cavalry leader in the Army to its Reaction die roll. If both of these modifiers apply to the same Reaction attempt, subtract one from the other to determine the final modifier. An army always fails its Reaction die roll on an unmodified die roll of 1. |

Hmm, the bullet point in my pdf says: [Cavalry] Wade Hampton: Hampton commanded the Army of Northern Virginia cavalry after the death of Stuart and became a lieutenant general. TOE: After removal of any two Cavalry leaders; ** (2+2). It also says the same for Kilpatrick. However, I downloaded the rules from the BGG page and that is the same as yours. I guess I must have an old copy of the rules, but I can't think where it came from - I only started playing the 3rd edition in 2019. It's unclear why it was changed, but the upshot is you're right: Hampton appears this turn. And I must replace those old rules. |

Yes, I would recommend all episodes of "the Ipcress file". It sticks closer to the original book than the Michael Caine film, and so goes into more depth. (Much the same as the film vs the TV series of "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy".) The only real problem with the TV series is that Joe Root seems to have done an impression of Michael Caine, which wasn't necessary. Another reason for watching it is that Len Deighton, the author, was a wargamer and a subscriber to S&T. He also wrote some decent military histories, for example: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Blood-Tears-Folly-Objective-Classics-ebook/dp/B08QVG53MP/ref=sr_1_20?crid=JY7P8BK98AIC&keywords=len+deighton&qid=1649967922&sprefix=len+deighton%2Caps%2C145&sr=8-20 Also, if you're interested in what's going on in Ukraine, highly recommend: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MH0xWWSJL00 |

Wow, knew about "the Lost Cause" and "the War of Northern Aggression", but holding someone's name against him 130 years after the event is a little extreme. Maybe the clerk had just watched "Gone with the Wind"? Mind you, there are some Scottish Nationalists who think "Braveheart" is a realistic depiction of events. (Actually, "Highlander" is probably closer to reality, but what can you expect from Mel Gibson? He seems to hate the English, too, but, in Hollywood, that is still allowed.) |

Hope I got that right - it took a while. First large battle of the war sees four dead leaders! An unsustainable rate of attrition, but the Union command starts to improve. Hard work for the Union as yet another turn produces no doubles. However, we finally have Kentucky - Georgia here we come (though it may not be with Uncle Billy.) All yours. |
