396 2/18/2024 2:57:00 AM 215-214 BC Carthage Message Just checking if you are playing any attacker battle cards
395 2/2/2024 3:04:00 AM 215-214 BC Carthage Message Oh, just missed.
So looks like a battle.
Hanno will NOT be playing any defense cards.
Assuming you do not play any cards,
Flam gets 8 + 2 = 10 battle cards
Hanno gets 4(CU) + 2(General) + 6(Allies) = 12 battle cards.

393 2/1/2024 11:16:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Play Strategy card as Operations #29: 2 / Carthaginian Naval Victory
(Carthage) For the rest of the year a -1 die roll modifier for naval movement applies, and Roman Naval Movement is limited to Minor or Major Campaign Strategy Cards.

Message from Rome:
I'll use this to activate Flaminius and his 8 CUs, who will move as follows:

- Icosium
- Saldae

Please advise whether you will attempt to Intercept, or Avoid Combat.
392 1/27/2024 2:52:00 AM 215-214 BC Carthage Play Strategy card as Operations #23: 3 / Numidian Ally
(Rome) Place up to three Roman PCs in Eastern Numidia in spaces which do not contain enemy CUs. If the space contains a Carthaginian PC, the PC is simply flipped.

Message from Carthage:

391 1/17/2024 9:10:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Message Excellent work, Varro! That's +2 Siege Points, which brings us to a total of 4, and the Boii are subjugated. Replace with a Roman PC.

(Both) Remove 1 Siege Point from any one Walled City

Message from Rome:
I'll use this to activate Varro, who will do another siege roll on Boii.
388 1/8/2024 3:39:00 AM 215-214 BC Carthage Message Happy New Year. Sure sounds like you have been burning the candle at both ends. Hope you do get a bit of a break. Only play our game when you have time, no rush or stress to play. Take care
387 1/8/2024 3:37:00 AM 215-214 BC Carthage Play Strategy card as Operations #18: 2 / Traitor in Tarentum
(Both) If you use this card as an OC to siege Tarentum, it comes under your control without a Siege die roll. Enemy CUs inside are eliminated.

Message from Carthage:
Carth move 4.
Time to firm up Africa.
Add PCs at Tupusuctu and Vescera in West Numidia.
386 1/8/2024 3:32:00 AM 215-214 BC Carthage Message Wow, I don't think I've ever seen a player having 3 Campaign cards in a turn, you should buy a lottery ticket.
385 12/31/2023 10:55:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Message Actually, let me make a slight adjustment to that. Until I made the move, I'd forgotten that Agrigentum was still under Carthaginian control. So I'll leave 1 CU behind there, and thus Flaminius now has 8 CUs in Zuccabar.
384 12/31/2023 10:54:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Message Actually, let me make a slight adjustment to that. Until I made the move, I'd forgotten that Agrigentum was still under Carthaginian control. So I'll leave 1 CU behind there, and thus Flaminius now has 8 CUs in Zuccabar.
383 12/31/2023 10:45:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Message Move 3. Flaminius will make a naval move with his 9 CUs to Icosium.

Once he lands there, he will use his remaining MP to move inland with his force to Zuccabar, of "Gladiator" fame.
382 12/31/2023 10:28:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Message So there are now 9 Roman CUs with Marcellus in the Insubrian space, and 5 with Varro at Boii.

381 12/31/2023 10:27:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Message It fails -- but at least as a result of Marcellus's Special Ability, I am spared any loss.

Still, when you get three Campaign cards in one turn, you have to figure your good luck won't last forever.

379 12/31/2023 10:22:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Message Unsuccessful, but at least no losses.

Move 2. Activate Marcellus, who will move with 8 CUs to the Insubrians, leaving 5 CUs behind with Varro. There will now be 9 Roman CUs with Marcellus in the siege lines surrounding the Insubrians.

And he will undertake a subjgation attempt against them.

Varro Subjugation Attempt on Boii.

377 12/31/2023 10:18:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Play Strategy card as Operations #34: 3 / Major Campaign
(Both) MOVE ANY THREE GENERALS. Each General can move up to four spaces with 10 combat units.

Message from Rome:
I understand from our recent exchange that this is played as Operations, and not as an Event Card.

Move 1. Actiavte Varro. He leaves 1 CU behind to maintain the siege of the Insubrians, and moves with his other 5 CUs to Boii, where his forces supplement the 8 CUs that Marcellus already has present there. The new total of their combined army is 13 CUs.

Varro will roll for Subjugation.
376 12/31/2023 9:44:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Message Dave, sorry I've been absent from the game for so long. The first three weeks of December were exhausting, and since my last hearing finished on Thursday, 12/20, I've been (a) trying to do all the Christmas stuff I'd had no time for and (b) to battle back from acute sleep deprivation. Work will remain busy in the next month, but hopefully not as bad as the last four months of last year were.

Our game is at an interesting point, so I'm looking forward to getting back to it.

375 12/4/2023 2:12:00 AM 215-214 BC Carthage Play Strategy card as Operations #8: 1 / Hostile Tribes

Hasdrubal stays still.
374 12/1/2023 11:03:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Play Strategy card as Event #35: 2 / Diplomacy
(Both) Convert any one non-walled, non-tribal enemy PC Marker in a space without an enemy CU into a friendly PC Marker.

Message from Rome:
Aided by the recent Roman successes, Roman diplomats persuade the restless citizens of Icosium in Western Numidia to shift their allegiance to Rome.
373 11/29/2023 1:27:00 AM 215-214 BC Carthage Message Here's the info on Truce and cards that break it.

CARDS WHICH DO NOT BREAK THE TRUCE: Counter cards (storm at sea, bad weather, etc.) do not end a truce, nor is a truce broken when an event is played that does not occur (e.g. Allied Auxiliaries when there are not generals in Italy to take the CUs). Events that move an army also do not break the Truce.
CARDS WHICH BREAK THE TRUCE:
REINFORCEMENT CARDS: 5 Auxiliaries, 4 Recruits, African/Macedonian Reinforcements, Balearic Slingers, Mutin's Numidians, Siege Train, Slaves.
REVOLT CARDS: Sicilia, Corsica/Sardinia, Celtiberia, Numidia, Syracuse, Numidian Ally, Sophonisba, Grain Shortage, and Capua Sides with Carthage.
ATTRITION CARDS: Both Hostile Tribe cards (if the event is used), Pestilence, Epidemic, Mercenaries Desert.
POLITICAL EVENTS: both Diplomacy cards, Philip V of Macedon, "I have come...", both counsel cards (Cato/Hanno), and Senate Dismisses Proconsul.
SORTIES: Surprise Sortie, Tribal Resistance, Opposing Fleet Breaks Siege.
SPECIAL: Messenger Intercepted, Naval Victory
Reinforcement Cards and Besieged Walled Cities
All events that bring reinforcements on to the map (Allied Auxiliaries, etc) are under the same restriction as reinforcements in regards to besieged walled cities.

372 11/29/2023 1:21:00 AM 215-214 BC Carthage Message Sorry for delay, my computer died and had to start all over.
371 11/29/2023 1:20:00 AM 215-214 BC Carthage Play Strategy card as Operations #44: 2 / Allied Auxiliaries (Apulia)

Message from Carthage:

1 CU remains at New Carthage.
370 11/20/2023 11:26:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Message Well, it's certainly hard to complain about that result, but it would've been nice to have the siege of the Boii over with.

Boii -- add 2 siege points (Damn! That Marcellus is good!)

2. Activate Varro and roll for subjugation against the Insubrians.

I saw what you said about this being an Operations card play, rather than an event -- but is there somewhere in the rules where it explains the distinction and how it applies in cases of Truces, etc.?
367 11/20/2023 5:13:00 AM 215-214 BC Carthage Message Thanks for the update. Playing games needs to be fun when you can do it, not a burden. Do your move when you have time, no rush.
366 11/18/2023 12:19:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Message Well, that was certainly a timely card play. Curses!

I've been swamped again at work but am now almost through my crunch period. Another hearing day on Monday and then things should return to something approaching normal (famous last words).
365 11/9/2023 1:41:00 AM 215-214 BC Carthage Play Strategy card as Event #53: 1 / Tribal Resistance

To add siege/subjugation points, you hit Shift and right click on mouse. Works for Boli but for some reason, doesn't seem to work on all the tribes.
363 10/28/2023 11:39:00 AM 215-214 BC Rome Message Well, that's much better. 2 Siege points are added to Boii.

However, I'm having trouble finding the marker to do so. Any ideas?

356 10/27/2023 10:53:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Message Thanks for the reminder! During the interregnum in our play, I forgot that I still had additional alternatives. Let me cogitate a bit.
355 10/23/2023 2:50:00 AM 215-214 BC Carthage Message Since you played a Major Campaign, you still have parts 2 and 3.
NOTE that although you said you played as an Event, it's actually just an Ops play, not an Event. It matters for Truce, and a few other things.
354 10/23/2023 2:42:00 AM 215-214 BC Carthage Message Ya, Mago fought a brilliant battle, just not quite good enough. He did manage to make it to the Leader square.
Remove Cirta and Thapsus in Africa.
353 10/21/2023 12:29:00 AM 215-214 BC Rome Message Oops! Correction: since there was no loss suffered on the Attrition roll -- I guess I'm still having trouble believing it -- Flaminius occupies Agrigentum with his full force of 9 CUs.

352 10/19/2023 11:44:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Message And, of course, Flaminius and his 8 remaining CUs occupy Agrigentum.
351 10/19/2023 11:42:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Message Finally, with losses of 5 CUs (shouldn't those 2 CU-e's count for something more?!), Carthage has to remove 2 PCs.

350 10/19/2023 11:41:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Message Now you lose 3 CUs, slightly better than half of your force. One of those has to be one of your two elephant units (CU-e). That leaves you with 1 CU and 1 CU-e.

But Mago has nowhere to retreat to, being pinned with his back to the sea in an otherwise hostile province, so the remainder of his army is eliminated.

In the final moments of confusion as the victorious Romans overrun the city, Mago and what is left of his staff manage to slip away in a small boat, and he lands in his Leader square.

Attrition Roll:

346 10/19/2023 11:28:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Message So the Third Battle of Agrigentum ends with a Roman victory in the Valley of the Temples.

I have to say that despite the lopsided odds, that was a remarkable nail-biter. In these combats between two leaders with low Battle Ratings, so much turns on the counterattack rolls. I'm thinking that in these types of battles, it probably is hugely important to be the Attacker and initiate the combat, because neither side has a particularly good chance of recovering the initiative if they lose it.

(Ironically, I've always thought that Mago's BR was a little under-rated, and that he should probably have been a 3. I suspect that has as much to do with play balance as anything else, although his naval capabilities do reflect some of his particular attributes.

345 10/19/2023 11:15:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Message I'm sorry to hear you've had a rough time of it with Covid. Was this your first go-round?

Rome: 13 cards
322 9/10/2023 12:55:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Message Okay. Since I now think we've figured out the source of my confusion, let's resume on the basis you set forth below.

For the Third Battle of Agrigentum:

Flam: 9 + 2 + 2 = 13
Mago: 5 + 2 = 7.

321 9/10/2023 12:40:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Message P.S. I have since realized that my speculations about where the Second Battle of Ariminum would have been fought were a little off-base. I thought the Via Flaminia came into Ariminum from out of the hills to the SW, in other words, roughly along the line of what is today the NW border of the Republic of San Marino.

Based upon this map that I looked at later, however, the Via Flaminia actually came across the Appenines farther south, where perhaps they were lower, striking the Adriatic somewhat to the SE of Ariminum, and then right along the Adriatic into Ariminum. Thus, the Via Flaminia did not meet the Via Emilia at an angle at the Arch of Augustus, as I was thinking last night, but rather simply merged directly into it. Thus, presumably the Via Flaminia simply ended at the south face of the arch, and the Via Emilia at its northern face. Given the Roman propensity for straight roads, this all makes sense.

Based upon the two maps here, the battle site would have likely been somewhere along the Adriatic, perhaps between Ariminum and a Roman town called Pisaurum.

https://www.sloweurope.com/community/threads/via-flaminia.5582/

[The link/website above is a particularly excellent one, with photos showing numerous locations and Roman remains along the Via Flaminia.]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Via_Flaminia#/media/File:Via_Flaminia.jpg

Of course, one additional point of interest about the Via Flaminia was that its construction was supervised by Gaius Flaminius, one of the Roman commanders in HRC (and now on duty in Sicily in our game).

320 9/10/2023 12:22:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Message I think I figured out what the problem was.

I had Mago on my game map as having 3 CUs total, of which 2 are 1 CU-e units, and 1 is a CU unit.

This was based on Post 156 and subsequent ones, as stated in my post 311. In 156, you had written,

"Mago sails with 3e2, has good weather, let's see if he makes it. die mod is -4."

In Post 159, where we resolved the resulting battle, I wrote:

“I think I can take a crack at resolving the battle.

You have 2 (Mago) + 3 CUs = 5 BCs
I have 2 CUs = 2.”

You didn't catch or correct that at that time.

Going back prior to Mago's voyage to Sicily, in Post 141, you wrote:

“Mago is now with Hanno at Carthage with 6e2.”

Going further back:

Post 69: Hanno has 5 at Carthage.
Post 81: Still 5 at Carthage
Post 110: 6e2 at Carthage

Thus, I think the problem here was be that I have been reading your 3e2 to mean “a total of 3 CUs, of which 2 are CU-e’s,” whereas I now perceive that you meant “a total of 5 CU’s, of which 3 are regular CU’s and 2 are CU-e’s.”

Is that correct?

If so, then it’s OK and we can proceed with the battle. But perhaps in the future we should use a common standard, like “Hannibal with 5 CUs & 2 CU-e’s” or 5CU/2CU-e.

319 9/10/2023 1:07:00 AM 215-214 BC Carthage Message Does your 317 post mean that you agree that Mago has 5 units in total 3CUs and 2 elephants, therefore gets 7 cards. Thanks for all the pics, I'll check them out.
318 9/10/2023 1:01:00 AM 215-214 BC Rome Message Here's something else I just found: a lovely image from Flickr that depicts the view from the northeastern end of the small Republic of San Marino, looking across the low by rolling hills as you approach the seaside plain and Ariminum/Rimini.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/sonydude/51854660174/in/photolist-2n1dFT5-2jJy4qj-2hvus9p-vjHhuu-2hvydoQ-NND1rA-MYLmMF-2gZN5Cr-2kqQh12-2oFoPQZ-2hvx7Qm-MY61mi-NXX6Ck-NTFrA3-NvmYD9-NLxxkJ-NUHowC-MZR75i-2oFsAnA-NNpfJv

317 9/10/2023 12:54:00 AM 215-214 BC Rome Message Oh, and a minor correction to my Post # 311. My game map reflects that Mago has 2 x 1CU-Es, & 1 CU, rather than the other way around.

I was quite fortunate that something went amiss with that daunting elephant charge.

Given that the coastal plain is relatively narrow here, I would hypothesize that the First Battle of Ariminum probably occurred somewhere along the Via Emilia as it approached the city from Modena/Mutina and the later city of Bologna, perhaps with Marcellus’s left flank resting on the Marechhia River. (It appears that the main bed of the Marrechia has since swung somewhat to the north, leaving only a smaller vestige of its original course that is crossed by the bridge of Augustus/Tiberius in the middle of the modern city.)

As for the Second Battle of Ariminum, Hannibal would then have been defending the city he had previously taken. I think it is reasonable to infer that he would have placed his line outside the city, right along the edge of the plain, forcing Fabius to deploy along the low hills in front of him, which should have complicated the movement of his troops and his own ability to supervise the conduct of the battle. Something clearly went wrong, however, and once Hannibal needed to retreat back towards Mutina, his army would have been forced to try and pull back through the narrow streets of the small settlement and then to try and get across the Marecchia River. It is easy to see how that might have produced the disastrous results reflected by your die roll of 6!

314 9/10/2023 12:05:00 AM 215-214 BC Rome Message There seem to be no Roman remains from old Ariminum (not Ariminium, as I had been spelling it) that date back to our period. There’s an arch that was erected in honor of Augustus in 27 BC, and a bridge across the river Ariminus that was initially built by Augustus and then rebuilt or upgraded under Tiberius around 20 AD, as shown in the images from Flickr below.

313 9/10/2023 12:03:00 AM 215-214 BC Carthage Message Ah, sorry for the notation. Mago has 3e2 which
means 3CUs +2elephants. Mago got 2 elephants in Carthage then sailed with 3e2 to Sicily. Hope that clears it up.
312 9/9/2023 11:42:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Message And, yes, I'm sure Aemilius Paulus is not a happy camper right now. Just as he thought he was about to move in for the kill . . .

But I once read another HRC game log on ACTS where Mago, in defense of Sardinia, scored a remarkable victory in a similarly lopsided situation.

311 9/9/2023 11:39:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Message Unless I've missed something, I think you only get 5 cards total. My board reflects that you have 2 x 1 CUs & 1 x 1 CU-E at Agrigentum, so only 3 CUs total, plus Mago's Battle Rating of 2.

Posts 156, 159, 164, and 178 all indicate that Mago's force totaled 3 CUs. (Of course, all that action was occurring back around November of last year!)

So, I make the battle breakdown as:

Flam: 9 + 2 + 2 = 13
Mago: 3 + 2 = 5.

Let me know if you agree, or if there was something I overlooked.

310 9/7/2023 2:08:00 AM 215-214 BC Carthage Message Not successful so cards are.
Flam: 9 + 2 + 2 = 13
Mago: 5 + 2 = 7.
You can deal and start.

308 9/7/2023 2:06:00 AM 215-214 BC Carthage Message I would be interested in any historical info you get.
Mago does not play any Defensive cards but does have his 2 Elephants charge.
307 9/7/2023 2:02:00 AM 215-214 BC Carthage Message A Paulus calls the elections rigged. He didn't have a chance to be voted in (he is so sad).
Also note that playing a Campaign card does NOT count as an event, this is only relevant in a few situations. Correct, you do not need to announce your other two moves with the Campaign card.
306 9/7/2023 2:00:00 AM 215-214 BC Carthage Message Han, still licking his wounds tries to send word to Mago that a large army is assembling at Panormus but it's too late !
305 9/5/2023 10:45:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Message Actually, I just recalled that since I have PCs in both Lilybaeum and Enna, you can't attempt to Avoid Battle under Rule 13.2(C). Things are coming back to me now.

(I'll try to come up with some information about the site of the Second Battle of Ariminum (today's Rimini) when time permits. I'm guessing that both the Metaurus and Rubicon Rivers are relatively near to it -- although from the strategies pursued by both sides, it seems likely that this battle would have occurred in a relatively broad plain.)

304 9/5/2023 10:33:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Play Strategy card as Event #33: 3 / Major Campaign
(Both) MOVE ANY THREE GENERALS. Each General can move up to four spaces with 10 combat units.

Message from Rome:
I'll play this for the Event. Unlike some other CDGs, I understand that in HRC, I am not required to disclose all three of my prospective campaigns before initiating the first one. Let me know if I have missed something.

Campaign # 1: Flaminius is activated and moves with his 9 CUs from Panormus to Agrigentum. Wiil Mago attempt to evade?

If not, I will not play any CCs here.

302 9/4/2023 11:06:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Message And I will be using a Campaign card to go first. But the hour is late and tomorrow is a work day, so I will make my move tomorrow night.

297 9/4/2023 10:46:00 PM 215-214 BC Rome Message Flaminius and Varro accept the congratulations of the People. Clearly, Varro still possess a certain popularity with the public as a result of his success at Bruttium. And Fabius gets to enjoy retirement, at least until the next time the state calls him back into service.

The Senate orders Varro to Ariminum, and Flaminius to Panormus.
